PENICHE, Portugal (Monday, October 19, 2009) – After assessing conditions throughout the morning, event organizers have opted to call a lay day for the Rip Curl Pro Search with only inconsistent two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf on offer at Supertubos.

Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search has yet to decide whether to run the traditional or new competition format, and event organizers will gauge available swell before making a final decision.

“We’ve watched conditions most of the morning and it’s not at the level we want it to be to call it on,” Damien Hardman, Rip Curl Pro Search Contest Director, said. “We’re expecting plenty of swell this week and don’t want to send the guys out in less-than-ideal conditions. We’ll be back tomorrow morning at 8am for a possible 8:30am start.

Surfline, official forecasters for the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search, are calling for the shoulder-high surf to dissipate throughout the day before a major Northwest swell begins filling in tomorrow afternoon and into Wednesday and Thursday.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8am for a possible 8:30am start.

PENICHE, Portugal (Tuesday, October 20, 2009) – Stormy seas and heavy rain have forced event organizers to call a second, consecutive lay day for the Rip Curl Pro Search.

Stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search experienced bigger waves on offer this morning but opted not to run due to the poor quality of the conditions. With eight days remaining in the waiting period, event organizers have optioned to activate the new competition format, featuring elimination, man-on-man heats from the outset.

“We’re obviously off this morning with victory-at-sea conditions and heavy winds,” Damien Hardman, Rip Curl Pro Search Contest Director, said. “The winds are heavy out of the Southwest at the moment that are projected to go heavy Northwest by 10am so it is onshore all day. This is the supposed to be the worst day for weather so we’ll be back in 8am tomorrow morning to reassess conditions.”

Surfline, official forecasters for the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search, are calling a major Northwest swell begins filling in this afternoon and into Wednesday and Thursday.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8am for a possible 8:30am start.

Massive Surf Destroys Primary Site, Rip Curl Pro Search Off for Today

PENICHE, Portugal (Wednesday, October 21, 2009) – No shortage of action at the Rip Curl Pro Search as high seas and heavy storms destroyed the event structure at the primary site of Supertubos last night before dealing out unruly six-to-eight foot (2 metre) surf at the backup site of Lagido.

Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search went on hold this morning after salvaging the wreckage of the primary site structure at Supertubos and opting to wait out the onshore eight-to-ten foot (3 metre) surf at Lagido. The wait would not prevail and event organizers opted to call competition off this afternoon.

“We really wanted to run today, but the site structure at Supertubos is too badly damaged today and the conditions at Lagido never materialized,” Damien Hardman, Rip Curl Pro Search Contest Director, said. “We’re still seeing plenty of swell on the forecast and better weather so we’ll be back at Supertubos tomorrow at 8am tomorrow.”

Surfline, official forecasters for the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search, are calling the current Northwest swell to maintain throughout the next couple of days.

MOHLE LESTE, Peniche/Portugal (Thursday, October 22, 2009) – Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro Search is set to commence this morning at 9:30am, with surfers doing battle in the wedging two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves on offer at the backup site of Mohle Leste.

Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search has endured three, consecutive lay days, and monstrous surf and storms that destroyed the event structure at the primary site of Supertubos, before reaching this morning’s clean conditions at Mohle Leste (in the northern corner of the Supertubos beach).

“We’ll be getting underway this morning at 9:30am at Mohle Leste,” Damien Hardman, Rip Curl Pro Search Contest Director, said. “We’re expecting conditions to improve throughout the day and are looking to run all of Round 1.”

The Rip Curl Pro Search event has elected to activate the new competition format, featuring elimination, man-on-man heats from the outset.

Upsets Abound On Opening Day of Rip Curl Pro Search Competition

Pictured: Marlon Lipke (DEU), 25, 2009 ASP World Tour rookie, scored a major upset today over fellow rookie Michel Bourez (PYF), 23, in Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro Search at Molhe Leste.

MOLHE LESTE, Peniche/Portugal (Thursday, October 22, 2009) – The Rip Curl Pro Search got underway today in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) wedging righthanders at Molhe Leste, where the world’s best surfers carved, snapped and aired their way through the opening eight heats of Round 1.

Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search operated at its third backup site today – the primary venue of Supertubes being destroyed by large surf and surging tides two nights ago and the backup sites of Lagido and Belgas buffeted by onshore winds today. Opting to run the new competition format, featuring man-on-man elimination heats from the outset, today’s Round 1 action saw no shortage of upsets, with five of the eight higher-seeded surfers eliminated from competition.

Marlon Lipke (DEU), 25, 2009 ASP World Tour rookie and current ASP World No. 44, scored a major victory today, defeating fellow rookie Michel Bourez (PYF), 23, utilizing an aggressive backhand approach to post the day’s highest heat total of a 14.66 out of a possible 20, and advance through to Round 2.

“I saw Michel (Bourez) free-surfing this morning and he surfed amazing,” Lipke said. “I thought to myself, ‘I just have to get the better waves’. Lucky, I did manage to get them. It feels so good, I forgot how good it feels to get through a heat as I haven’t got through one all year!”

Lipke, who was born in Germany but raised in Portugal, enjoyed throngs of local support today after the elimination of Tiago Pires (PRT), 29, in the third heat of the morning.

“My parents are German, I was born in Lisbon and a lot of my friends are Portuguese, they are all here supporting me,” Lipke said. “The local crowd is so supportive so it is great to get through here at home."

Owen Wright (AUS), 19, wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro Search and current No. 3 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), is no stranger to the elite level of competition, having attended the past two years’ worth of Rip Curl Pro Search events. One of the up-and-coming stars of the sport, Wright displayed his world-class talent today in eliminating former ASP World Junior Champion (2005) and current ASP World No. 17, Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 24, in Round 1 of competition.

“I have been to the Rip Curl Search event in Chile and Bali and that was great,” Wright said. “The Search concept allows the guys to go somewhere different every time and they are the best surfers in the world so they can deal with anything. I am really stoked to be put alongside of these guys and be able to compete here in Portugal.”

Undefeated on the 2009 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series, Wright has carried his preternatural momentum onto the grueling ASP WQS this season where he has already secured a spot on next year’s prestigious ASP World Tour.

“The game plan at the start of the year was to dabble in the ASP WQS but after the first contests, things started to change and take off,” Wright said. “I am pretty stoked to have made it to the Dream Tour, it is every competitive surfer’s dream.”

Joining Lipke and Wright in today’s upsets were Jihad Khodr (BRA), 25, Nathaniel Curran (USA), 25, and Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 23.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8am for a possible 8:30am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be Dean Morrison (AUS), 28, up against Justin Mujica (PRT), 32, in Heat 9 of Round 1.

Surfline, official forecasters for the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search, are calling the current Northwest swell to maintain throughout the next couple of days before a WNW swell fills in for the weekend.

Rip Curl Pro Search Back ON at Backup Site of Lagido

LAGIDO, Peniche/Portugal (Friday, October 23, 2009) – The Rip Curl Pro Search is called on this morning, with the back half of Round 1 taking on the clean four-to-five (1 – 1.5 metre) lefthanders of the backup site of Lagido, beginning at 9am.

Stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search ran the opening eight heats of Round 1 yesterday at the third backup venue of Molhe Leste, but with more favorable winds for the other side of the peninsula projected for the day, event organizers have opted for the reeling lefthanders of Lagido in hopes of running as many heats as possible.

“We have much more favorable conditions on offer today but the winds were looking a bit onshore at Supertubes and much cleaner at the backup venue of Lagido,” Damien Hardman, Rip Curl Pro Search Contest Director, said. “It’s high tide right now and we’re still seeing some good waves come through and we expect it to improve as the tide drops out.”

Up first this morning is Dean Morrison (AUS), 28, against Justin Mujica (PRT), 32, in Heat 9 of Round 1.

Surfline, official forecasters for the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search, are calling the current Northwest swell to maintain throughout the next couple of days before a WNW swell fills in for the weekend.

LAGIDO, Peniche/Portugal (Friday, October 23, 2009) – The Rip Curl Pro Search, stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, completed the remaining eight heats of Round 1 today in clean four-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) waves at the backup site of Lagido.

On the fifth day of the waiting period, the Rip Curl Pro Search has experienced a gamut of action in the Peniche region of Portugal, ranging from massive seas,  destroyed event structures, running at the third backup venue of Mohle Leste yesterday to today’s clean lefthanders at Lagido.

As the second-to-last event on the ASP Dream Tour, and opting to run the man-on-man elimination format from the outset, the Rip Curl Pro Search has played host to some of the more dramatic bouts of the season throughout the opening round of competition.

Drew Courtney (AUS), 30, 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie and current ASP World No. 32, punctuated the day’s action with the most exciting heat of the event, defeating fellow rookie Dustin Barca (HAW), 27. Needing solid results in the final two events of the season to ensure his place amongst the world’s best for 2010, Courtney is focused on continuing his momentum from the last event in Spain.

“It is probably the biggest comp all year for me,” Courtney said. “I have come off a good result last week (in Spain), so I just want to keep improving and hopefully get another 5th at this competition, that would be great.”

Courtney belted the offshore lefthanders, threading barrels and executing exciting top turns on his backhand to acquire the event’s high heat total of a 17.17 out of a possible 20.

“I got off to a good start,” Courtney said. “The waves kind of suited me so I was just free surfing and kept improving wave by wave. A few waves came my way so I got into a good rhythm and ended up sneaking into a barrel. There were great waves out there and I’m stoked we moved it over to Lagido today.”

Courtney will face Taylor Knox (USA), 28, when Rip Curl Pro Search competition resumes.

Greg Emslie (ZAF), 32, current ASP World No. 31, was another who built momentum throughout the improving afternoon conditions, opting to focus on performance rather than ratings in his advancement to Round 2 over Aritz Aranburu (EUK), 25.

“I have had so many years stressing about the bubble,” Emslie said. “To be honest, it is the first time in my life that I couldn’t tell you how many points I am on. I just want to go and surf, feel good and enjoy competing. I find when you are stressing about what points you are on, it takes that away from you, you’re not doing your proper surfing. I am going to let the surfing do the talking and hopefully the rest will take care of itself."

Emslie has drawn dangerous goofy-footer Damien Hobgood (USA), 30, in Round 2 of the Rip Curl Pro Search.

Bruno Santos (BRA), 26, past winner of the Billabong Pro Tahiti (as a wildcard), continued to terrorize the ASP Top 45 today, eliminating veteran campaigner Mick Campbell (AUS), 35, in Round 1 of competition.

“I am pretty happy,” Santos said. “When I got the wildcard of was really excited about Supertubes and Peniche. I am pretty happy that I did a good job here today. I am happy to beat Mick (Campbell), he is such a good surfer.”

A regular wildcard fixture in the past two Rip Curl Search events (Chile in 2007 and Indonesia in 2008), Santos, along with Owen Wright (AUS), 19, are the remaining wildcards left in the Rip Curl Pro Search.

“I like surfing the Search events and surfing against the best guys,” Santos said. “We get to surf really good waves with one guy in the water so I am really happy to be at these contests.”

Santos will take on current ASP World No. 2, Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, in Round 2 of the Rip Curl Pro Search when competition resumes.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8am at Lagido to assess conditions for a possible 8:30am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be former ASP World Champion (2001), C.J. Hobgood (USA), 30, up against 2009 ASP World Tour rookie Nathaniel Curran (USA), 25, in the opening heat of Round 2.

Surfline, official forecasters for the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search, are calling the current Northwest swell to drop slightly over the next 24 hours before another solid WNW swell comes in for the weekend.

Wright Ousts Slater During ASP World Title Shake-Up at Rip Curl Pro Search

BELGAS, Peniche/Portugal (Satuday, October 24, 2009) – The first 13 heats of Round 2 of the Rip Curl Pro Search were completed today in punchy three-to-four foot (1 – 1.5 metre) waves at the second backup site of Belgas. Despite the remoteness of the location, an estimated 20,000 fans showed up to compliment the hundreds of thousands online who watched the world’s best surfers do battle.

Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, today’s Rip Curl Pro Search played host to some of the most dramatic action of the season including the ascension of a young superstar, the defeat of an icon and a major shake-up in the 2009 ASP World Title race.

Owen Wright (AUS), 19, wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro Search, caused the upset of the event in eliminating reigning nine-time ASP World Champion, Kelly Slater (USA), 37, in Round 2 of the Rip Curl Pro Search; a repeat of his incredible feat from last April when Wright trumped the Floridian at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

The heat was an extremely tight affair with Slater opening up with solid scores on both his forehand and backhand while his younger opponent waited patiently. Wright’s progressive forehand arsenal was put to use in the punchy lefthanders, threading barrels and stomping air reverses to come within striking distance of the champ. Needing a solid score with time winding down, Wright pulled into a lengthy left barrel to score a 7.73 out of a possible 10 to take the lead and the heat win.

“I feel great, it was a really tough heat with not many waves,” Wright said. “Kelly (Slater) got the jump on me and opened up early so I sat and waited to try and get the bigger and better waves. Every time I have watched a heat of Kelly’s on the tour the waves turn on so I was stoked to be out there with him and have such good exchanges.”

Wright, who has just resigned with major sponsor Rip Curl for a further five years, has had an incredible 2009. Undefeated on the ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series, Wright has also secured the current No. 3 spot on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), cementing his position on the 2010 ASP World Tour.

“I’ve had a pretty incredible year,” Wright said. “When I started in January, I was just focused on the junior series and building a seed on the ASP WQS. After the first few events on the ’QS, I was sitting near the top and reevaluated my year. Now that I’ve qualified for next season, I’m just focused on improving my surfing and getting as much experience as possible.”

Wright will battle California wunderkind Dane Reynolds (USA), 24, in Round 3 of the Rip Curl Pro Search.

Slater’s Equal 17th place finish at the Rip Curl Pro Search marks his fourth of the season, effectively eliminating his chance for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title in 2009. Despite the disappointment, Slater is keen to finish strong at the final event at Pipeline in December.

“The Dream Tour has been a nightmare this year,” Slater said. “One guy wins, one guys loses. That puts me out of the title race. It would be nice to win Pipe, perhaps have a little battle with Andy (Irons), that would be good.”

While Slater is out of the running, the 2009 ASP World Title race has been extended past the European leg following today’s action, and will be decided at the final event at Pipeline in Hawaii.

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, current ASP World No. 2, suffered three Equal 17ths following his last ASP World Tour win in Jeffreys Bay in July. Although rumors of a niggling ankle injury have run rampant, the stylish natural-footer has denied any physical hindrance to his surfing. A major contender in the hunt for the 2009 ASP World Title, the Australian remains focused on the immediate task of winning heats.

“I’m 100% and frothing,” Parkinson said. “I guess I don’t really get caught up in the world title thing and I am just thinking about my own heats. I’ve got a few results I need to throw away and a few more keepers are needed. There have been a few guys on the bubble who have now been knocked out. It is really sad to lose your friends, it is like using a soldier, but I guess then that brings new faces to the tour.”

Parkinson will face Kai Otton (AUS), 29, when Rip Curl Pro Search competition recommences.

Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, former ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 1, kept the Gold Coast race for the 2009 ASP World Title alive this afternoon, surviving a near elimination at the hands of replacement surfer Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 23, in the final heat of the day.

“Pat (Gudauskas) was out in front and I got that one wave to get back into the lead under Pat’s priority so that was lucky,” Fanning said. “The conditions were really fun, we’ve had some really tough waves in Europe, especially that last event. I think everyone was pretty stoked when we rocked up this morning. Even though everyone can perform in anything, it is really good to get out there in nice clean conditions.”

Fanning, who took out the inaugural Rip Curl Pro Search event in Reunion Island in 2005, has been on a roll through the back half of the 2009 ASP Dream Tour season and is a heavy favorite as the event moves into the business end.

Bobby Martinez (USA), 27, current ASP World No. 8, is a perennial standout at the Rip Curl Pro Search events, and the possibility of laying claim to the prestigious Rip Curl Pro Search “planet” trophy is a key motivating factor in Martinez’s performance in Portugal, today advancing past Nic Muscroft (AUS), 27, into Round 3.

“I tell my wife every day, if I could win one trophy it would be this one,” Martinez said. “If I never win one I swear I am going to have one made. I love the globe and the gold around it. It is the best trophy around and I would be honoured to get my hands on it, but that is a long way from here.”

Martinez will take on 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie Drew Courtney (AUS), 30, in Round 3 of the Rip Curl Pro Search.

When competition resumes, first up will be Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), 27, up against Ben Dunn (AUS), 23, in Heat 14 of Round 2.

Surfline, official forecasters for the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search, are calling for a solid WNW swell to push through the next 48 hours.
