Top Seeds Elevate Performance Levels on Day 2 of Billabong Pro Tahara

IRAGO LONG BEACH, Tahara/Aichi(Friday, July 26th, 2013) - The Billabong Pro Tahara presented by Xperia, the fifth ASP Japan event of 2013, completed the Round 96 followed by the opening Round of 64 heats in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Oishi Beach in Akabane, Tahara, Aichi.


Top seeds took to the water in the Round of 64 today, but Hawaiian Kaoliopuuwai Kahokul (HAW) would earn the day’s highest scores in the Round of 96. Kahokul started his heat with an excellent 9.00 ride backed with a 7.83 for a combined 16.83 heat total.


Ryan Bignold (AUS), Shun Murakami (JPN), Teppei Tajima (JPN), and Ryan Callinan (AUS) would start strong at the Billabong Pro Tahara with Round of 64 wins, moving to the Round of 32 in first place today. Callinan, a young gun from Newcastle currently ranked in 131st on the ASP World Ranking, would score an excellent 8.07 backed up with 7.93, taking the round’s high combined score of 16.00 points moves to the round of 32.


First call will be tomorrow morning is 7:30am with surfers Matt Pagan (USA), Takayuki Wakita (JPN), Kylen Yamakawa (HAW), and Takkesh Mizoguchi (AUS) surfing in heat 5 of the round of 64.

The ASP 4 Star Event Billabong Pro Tahara presented by Xperia is the largest surfing event in Japan. Running for 4 days, the event starts on the 25th of July and will run through to the 28th, at Tahara in Aichi Prefecture. The event boasts a total prize pool of USD $95,000 and will be held at Long Beach or Loco Point, Irago. Tahara is famous for its consistent beach breaks, which often produce hollow waves with the right swell direction.


Long Beach and Loco Point join together to create a magical stretch of beach, which boasts potential high performance beach breaks and is well known for its perfect sand banks. As one of the most popular surf points in Japan, many international surfers from Australia, Hawaii and Japan have signed up for the event.
