Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro
« am: Oktober 28, 2008, 13:20:10 »

Die "Brasilian Open" sind gestartet, ein eher trauriges Event...

*Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro*

*Stop No. 10 of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour *

*Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil*

*Oct. 28-Nov. 5, 2008*

* *

*9am Start for the Hang Loose Santa Catarina in Imbituba, Brazil*

*IMBITUBA, Brazil (Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008)* – Today is the first of a nine-day
waiting period for the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, the second to last stop on
the 2008 ASP World Tour, and the action will commence in Imbituba, Brazil at
9am. Favorable four to five foot (one metre plus) conditions are on offer this
morning.

Pancho Sullivan (HAW) has pulled out of the event while Adriano de Souza (BRA)
has been sidelined by a twisted ankle – their last minute withdrawals brings the
number of ASP World Tour surfers not competing in Brazil from 11 to 13.

DeSouza entered the 2008 ASP World Tour season shooting for a Top 10 finish. He
is currently rated 5^th and was eager to impress at home, but could not overcome
a recent injury.

“I’m not feeling good ,” de Souza said. I’m just getting better from a twisted
ankle I injured in the Rio de Janeiro WQS, so I am not 100% which is very
unlucky because I was looking to get a good result in Brazil.”

Former ASP World Tour surfers Raoni Monteiro (BRA) and Peterson Rosa (BRA) will
replace De Souza and Sullivan. Twenty of the 48 surfers competing in the Hang
Loose Santa Catarina Pro are Brazilian.

Bruno Santos (BRA), the wildcard who won at Teahupoo, Tahati earlier this year
is also in the Hang Loose draw as a replacement surfer.

The event will be webcast live on www.aspworldtour.com

*Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro*

*Stop No. 10 of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour *

*Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil*

*Oct. 28-Nov. 5, 2008*

* *

*Smith Makes Painful Priority Mistake at Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro*

*Pictured: *Raoni Montiero went big in Round 1 but still lost out to World No. 3
Bede Durbidge.

**

*IMBITUBA, Brazil (Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008)* –With a scoreline boasting the day’s
highest heat total and single wave score (a 17.17 and 9.50 respectively) ASP
World Tour rookie Jordy Smith (ZAF) looked like he would be collecting top
honors on Day 1 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro. Two interference calls
later, Smith had a 0.00 to show for his standout performance in Imbituba’s five
foot waves today.

Taking the heat instead was fellow rookie and Spanish Basque surfer Aritz
Aranburu. Aranburu also blitzed, putting up an 8.50 early and finishing the heat
with 16.00 points to finish ahead of wildcard Simao Romao (BRA) and Smith.

“It was a difficult heat, I started well with an 8.50 score but Jordy also got
really good waves,” Aranburu says. “Then in the last three minutes a small wave
came toward me, and I knew that I need to get a big score, so I started paddling
for the wave. I was in the best position but Jordy started paddling too, so the
judges give him interference.”

According to ASP Head Judge Perry Hatchett: “At the initial point of take-off,
the wave was a superior left , with white (Aranburu)  in position to take it.
Red (Smith) was on the wrong side of the peak trying to go right on the
close-out with no scoring potential so the interference was called on red (Smith).”

Frustrated, Smith then took off on a wave Romao had priority on, suffered
another interference and lost both his scores. Smith, who currently sits 22^nd
on the ratings, has yet to advance past Round 4 this year. He will meet Pedro
Henrique in Round 2.

ASP World Tour No. 3 Bede Durbidge (AUS) won a tight Heat over former ASP World
Tour and replacement surfer Raioni Monteiro (BRA) and Damien Hobgood (USA) to
advance straight to Round 3 today. Durbidge scored a 9.00 and 6.33 for a 15.33
heat total.

“It was a fun wave, I made a couple of turns and a good air in the end,”
Durbidge said of his 9.00 ride. “The waves are so fun. I’m enjoying myself and I
really want to win but I need to get through more heats, so I’ll be surfing one
heat at a time and trying my best.”

World No. 2 and the 2005 winner of the event Taj Burrow (AUS) also advanced
today. With newly crowned nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) not
competing, Burrow is the No. 1 seed in the event.

“From what I have seen so far, all the local surfers are surfing really good and
being the top seed I have to surf against the locals,” Burrow said. “It’s not
easy, but I’m really looking to make heats and to try to win the event.”

Five of the 20 Brazilian surfers competing in the Hang Loose Pro won their heats
today. Replacement surfer Hizunome Bettero (BRA), who is currently in a position
to qualify for the Dream Tour next year if he can maintain his No. 13 rating on
the ASP World Qualifying Series through Hawaii, was the highest scoring of the
Brazilian contingent.

“I was pretty stoked to be invited to compete in this event as a wildcard,”
Bettero said. “I’m surfing with no pressure, enjoying myself and I will try to
show my best surfing. Competing here is a dream because I usually see these guys
on TV and in magazines. I hope to be on the ASP World Tour next year but I need
to get a good result in Hawaii this year.”

Also surfing well today was Brazil’s Leonardo Neves. He beat Tom Whitaker (AUS)
and Henrique to earn a Round 3 berth today.

“Getting it right in the first heat is very important and now I have time to
watch the comp and train more,” Neves said. “The swell arrived today and I’m
pretty stoked with this result.”

Neves is currently rated 39^th on the ASP World Tour and will need huge results
in the last two events of the year to requalify for the 2009 ASP World Tour.

“I’m happy to be back here in Vila Beach,” Neves said. “I remember last year
that I needed a good result, like this year, and I got it, so that is giving me
a lot of motivation. This comp is very important for all Brazilians on the ASP
World Tour.”

Also avoiding 33^rd place results they could not afford were Dan Ross (AUS) –
World No. 42, Mick Campbell (AUS) – World No. 28 and Miky Picon (FRA) – World
No. 26. Only the Top 27 surfers on the ASP World Tour requalify for the
following year’s tour.

Chris Ward (USA) missed his Round 1 heat today due to Visa complications. He
will surf in Round 2. A call on Round 2 will be made tomorrow morning at 7:30am.

Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro
Stop No. 10 of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour
Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil
Oct. 28-Nov. 5, 2008

Taj Burrow on Track to Take Top Honors at Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro

Photo: Taj Burrow takes to the skies in Round 3 at Praia da Vila in Imbituba.

IMBITUBA, Brazil (Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008) – Taj Burrow (AUS) has made it abundantly clear that he made the trek to Brazil to win the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.

The current World No. 2 amassed the highest heat total of the event to take out former tour surfer Raoni Monteiro (BRA) 18.10 to 13.17 today. If Burrow goes on to win the event, it will mark his fourth ASP World Tour victory in Brazil.

“I’m feeling good and confident, just warming up, feeling my board, the waves and the water, so I’m happy to be here in Brazil,” Burrow said. “I really want to win this contest.”

Brazil’s punchy beach breaks suit Burrow’s style perfectly, allowing him to use his aerial antics to delight the fans on the beach and the judges alike. Today was no exception.

“I’m surfing pretty comfortably,” Burrow said. “It’s good when the jet-skis pick you up and you can surf a lot of waves. It’s really fun out there because you can try trick maneuvers and do aerials.”

World No. 3 Bede Durbidge (AUS) also made his heat today. Though Durbidge would love nothing more to finish the year second behind nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) and ahead of Burrow, he’s trying to take it all in stride at the moment.

“I just try to not think too much about it,” Durbidge said. “I’m just trying to have fun and enjoy Brazil, so let’s see what happens.”

Replacement surfer Marco Polo (BRA) free fell to a last minute victory over World No. 12 Kai Otton in the first heat of the day. Otton led the majority of the Round 3 bout, but suffered his third Round 3 loss in as many events when Polo earned an 8.67 with a minute and a half to go.

“It was like a Final,” Polo said. “In the end I was out there waiting for a wave, hoping for a big one and then right at the end of the heat I dropped in on a set wave, did two maneuvers and finished with a huge floater. It was a very great wave and I very happy to move on.”

Leonardo Neves (BRA) equaled his best result of his rookie season by beating Jordy Smith (ZAF) today. Currently sitting No. 39 in the ratings – a big result in Brazil is crucial for Neves to requalify as a Top 27 surfer on the ASP World Tour.

“When I saw Marco Polo turn his heat with the last wave I got a really nice energy from him and I felt confident before my heat,” Neves said. “The crowd was rooting for him and then for me, so I thought, ‘today is the Brazilian day.’ I had luck in my heat and caught two good waves, so I’m stoked. I need a very good result here to go to Hawaii more relaxed and keep my spot on the tour.”

The other two Brazilian surfers still in contention for the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro Crown are rookie Heitor Alves and former ASP World Tour surfer and event wildcard Bernardo Miranda.

Fred Patacchia is the only Hawaiian still competing in the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro. He beat Hizunome Bettero (BRA) to lock down a Round 4 duel with lone Californian Timmy Reyes. Florida’s Hobgood brothers and North Carolina’s Ben Bourgeois round out the Americans still competing.

France’s two-man contingent are also still in contention after advancing from Round 3. Jeremy Flores (FRA) earned a 9.80 – the highest single wave score of the event – to beat replacement surfer Marcio Farney (BRA) 17.97 to 12.00. Miky Picon (FRA) beat Mick Campbell (AUS) 15.84 to 12.86.

Guaranteed equal 9th or better results are season-bests for Burgeois and Daniel Ross (AUS). Ross convincingly eliminated Chris Ward (USA) courtesy of a 9.33 in his scoreline today.

“There are some good lefts out there and I picked up a good one, surfed it well and got a good score,” Ross said. “To get good waves you have to massacre them. I’m looking to make more heats and I hope to have another good one against Tom Whitaker, we are good mates.”

Ross and Whitaker will meet in Heat 3 of Round 4 which may well be held tomorrow. Australian Dayyan Neve is also still surfing the event and is matched up with Miranda in Heat 6.

Another call on competition status will be made tomorrow morning at 7:30am. For more information visit www.aspworldtour.com.

IMBITUBA, Brazil (Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008) – Round 4 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro will commence at 8:30am local time. Conditions are currently three foot (one metre) and rainy.

Event officials have yet to make the call as to whether or not the last seven heats of the event will be run after Round 4, but unless the weather clears dramatically, it is unlikely.

The first heat of the day will be an all-Brazilian affair with event wildcard Marco Polo taking on rookie Leonardo Neves.

Taj Burrow (AUS), the No. 1 seed in the event, will take on Miky Picon of France in Heat 4 of Round 4. A decision on whether the event will go into the quarterfinals and beyond will be made at the end of Round 4.
