Swell Fails to Evolve as Wait Continues at ASP WLT Bear Pro presented by Jeep

LEVANTO, Italy (Monday, November 14, 2011) – The ASP World Longboard Tour (WLT) Bear Pro presented by Jeep is continuing to experience the effects of a large high pressure system located over the Mediterranean Sea which has forced event officials to call another lay day for competition today.

The strength and stability of the high pressure system is not allowing developing lows to push across and change the current beautiful weather on offer at the main event site in Levanto. Bear Pro presented by Jeep Contest Director Julien ‘Vico’ Hamel was on hand at the morning call to give the latest information regarding swell forecasts for the remaining days in the official waiting period.

“I just checked the charts again this morning and we still have this very high pressure system of about 1030 millibars so it is similar to what we get here in the summer time. So it is really strong and it is going to be hard for the actual low pressure to squeeze in. What we do know is that there is something coming up through France this week with a 35ft swell on the Atlantic side so with luck this low pressure can push across towards us and send something to us from the North West.”

Hamel also went on to explain the situation of another possible pulse of swell coming through from the South.

“Regarding the south west push we were supposed to be having, it is shyer than expected and so I don’t think it will push anything through bigger than half a foot. So right now we are relying on two options, this little south push and this southwest low which will come here around Wednesday. The high pressure system is just too big and it is sitting there and sending good weather but we can’t get waves like this.”

The Bear Pro presented by Jeep are aware of the situation of the 32 competitors and are doing their best to maintain the surfers occupied and giving them the opportunity to experience the Italian culture and visit numerous of the many tourist attractions in the Levanto area.

“We had a big fund raiser last night for all the victims of the floods so most of the surfers went there and it was a big party all night long,” stated Hamel. So knowing there was no swell today I think some of them really enjoyed the evening. Today for the guys who want to come, we have organised a trip to the marble cave where Michelangelo obtained the marble to carve his statue of ‘David’ so it should be a really interesting trip for the competitors who wish to come. In the afternoon we will have again activities on the beach with cable surfing to keep everybody moving and entertained.”

Matt Aldridge (Rainbow Bay, Coollangatta AUS) 28, who is up against Antoine Delpero (FRA) in Heat nº1 when competition starts, is up early each morning for the 7.30am call and ready to hit the water as soon as the green light is given for Bear Pro presented by Jeep to commence. Competing in his maiden ASP WLT event Aldridge is here to gain experience and enjoy the tourist sights in Italy.

“It is my first time to Levanto and Europe actually. It is my first event on the ASP WLT tour and it is a awesome place. The waves were pumping the other day and now it has gone flat at the moment. Hopefully in the next few days we will start to see waves. It is such a nice spot that we are able to cruise around and check out all the scenery on offer. I flew into Rome on the way over and caught up with a few friends touring around there. Amazing sights in ancient Rome and the Vatican. Just nothing like that back home in Australia.”

“Absolutely stoked. I didn’t think it would happen,” continued Aldridge regarding his late call up to the Bear Pro presented by Jeep. “I was at work when I got the call and it made work pretty enjoyable that day. (laughs) I am stoked to be here and we have 32 of the world’s best surfers here so hopefully we will get some waves and show the lovely people of Levanto what we can actually do.”
