Women’s Quarterfinalists Decided at Arnette ASP World Junior pres. by Quiksilver

Dimity Stoyle (AUS), 17, current No. 2 on the ASP Women's World Junior, was in striking form while advancing into the Quarterfinals today.

APROADOR, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Wednesday, October 26, 2011) – The 2011 Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver continued today in tricky one-to-three foot (.5 metre) waves at Arpoador and saw the women take to the water to decide the Quarterfinalists after completing three rounds of competition.

Stop No. 2 of 3 on the ASP World Junior Tour, the inaugural Arnette ASP World Junior plays a vital role in deciding the prestigious title of ASP World Junior Champion.

Joanne Defay (REU), 17, current No. 3 on the ASP Women’s World Junior Ranking, was dominant at Arpoador, scalping both her Round 1 and Round 3 heats in commanding fashion while earning the highest single-wave score of Arnette ASP World Junior competition, a 9.63 (out of 10) to advance through to the Quarterfinals.

“It feels good to make it through to the Quarterfinals,” Defay said. “I’ve been here for the last five days and training every morning and every evening after the contest. I feel ready for the Quarterfinals and I hope we’re going to have some waves. This wave can be really hard, but it’s okay, when you get a good one it’s fun.”

Dimity Stoyle (AUS),20, opened her Arnette ASP World Junior Campaign in sharp form, taking a dominant Round 1 victory before posting one of the day’s highest heat-totals of 17.17 (out of 20) in Round 3.

“It’s really tricky out there and the water is freezing too,” Stoyle said. “I fell off a couple of good ones at the start and I shouldn’t have because they could have been good scores. It was tricky too, having those Brazilian girls because they love to catch waves and it can be hard to try and catch waves amongst them.  I knew I had to get a couple of waves up early because they’d try and circle me and that’s what I tried to do. I just wanted to win the heat, I didn’t want to come off second. I just got that last one so I’m happy.”

Stoyle, current No. 2 on the ASP Women’s World Junior Ranking, is the event’s top seed with the absence of Coco Ho (HAW), 20, and is trying to maintain the same approach that earned her the success in Bali while hunting the ASP Women’s World Junior Title.

“It’s kind of good being number one seed and hopefully I get a good draw and everything,” Stoyle said. “I’m trying not to do anything differently because Bali went so well. I’m just going to do my own thing and do that this time too.”

Leila Hurst (HAW), 18, who suffered an early elimination at the season opening event in Bali, rebounded in excellent fashion today while putting on commanding performances to earn her Quarterfinals berth and is taking a relaxed approach to competition at the Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver.

“I’m not really going for the title now and I figured, just have fun and I have nothing to lose since I’m not in contention to win the World Junior Title,” Hurst said. “There’s no pressure. I really like Brazil. I like the shopping of course and the food is amazing.”

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am local time for a possible 7:30 start to competition.

The Arnette World Junior presented by Quiksilver holds a waiting period from October 24 through November 2, 2011 and is webcast LIVE via http://www.brasilopenofsurfing.com.br
