Lay Day Called For Day 1 of the Quiksilver Brazil Open of Surfing

ARPOADOR BEACH, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Tuesday, October 18, 2011) - With small waves on offer and a favorable forecast for the upcoming days at Arpoador Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the ASP World 6-Star Quiksilver Brazil Open of Surfing presented by Arnette was called off for the day but is expected to start on Wednesday.

“The forecast looks really good for next few days, so it didn’t make sense to begin with rainy weather and small conditions,” said Sergio Lindemann, Event Director for Adding Sports which is organizing the event. “The waves should begin to increase in size tomorrow (Wednesday) with promising winds from the East/Northeast direction coming on Friday which could hopefully present excellent conditions during the weekend at Arpoador.”

A total of 144 surfers from 19 different countries are in Rio de Janeiro to compete in the Quiksilver Brazil Open of Surfing which finishes off on Sunday.  The majority of the athletes are from Brazil (101) with international representatives from Australia (7), United States (7), Hawaii (6), Peru (4), Venezuela (3), Spain (2), Reunion Island (2), Argentina (2), Japan (1), France (1), Portugal (1), Germany (1), South Africa (1), New Zealand (1), Mexico (1), Chile (1), Uruguay (1) and Panama (1).  Each one is going after the U$145,000 in prize money and the 3,500 points going towards their ASP One World Ranking.

The Quiksilver Brazil Open of Surfing presented by Arnette is brought to you by Adding Sports with the supervision of the Surfing Federation of Rio de Janeiro (FESERJ) and sponsored by Arnette, Oi, Quiksilver and the State of Rio de Janeiro through the Secretary of Sports and Leisure.  The event is part of the ASP South America Circuit as ASP World 6-Star event is also supported by Oi Futuro, Oi FM, Urgh, DC, Roxy, the City of Rio de Janeiro and the Favela Surf Club.  The event is broadcast live through www.adding.com.br/brasilopen/
