Lay Day Called at ASP 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro

Event site at the Sooruz Lacanau Pro

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau Ocean – France (Friday, August 19, 2011) – The ASP 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro has called a lay day due to incontestable 0.30m waves on offer at the main event site of Grande Plage. The swell forecast looks even flatter for tomorrow and an official call will be made on Sunday morning for the expected run through the semi-finals to the crowning of this year’s Sooruz Lacanau Pro champion.

“There are no waves this morning and the forecast is looking pretty good for Sunday with the size and period of the swell increasing considerably” stated Cyril Camu, contest director and event organiser. “We’re planning on surfing at mid-tide in the afternoon around 3-4PM.”

Semi-finalists were decided yesterday and Gabriel Medina (BRA) showed once again his domination in small waves. Cyril Camu commented on the final four surfers remaining in the event.

“We hoped to have Gabriel (Medina) and Vincent (Duvignac) in the final but unfortunately Vincent lost his quarter final heat again Ryan Callinan. Still we’re very happy to have such great surfers battling it out for the title.”

Medina (BRA) could write a new page in the history books of the oldest event on the European schedule if he can keep his momentum and win the event.

“We have never had a winner of the Pro Junior event also winning the Star Series so Medina could make history if he keeps dominating like he’s been doing the whole event”.

Lacanau is situated just an hour from the main city of Bordeaux and this year’s attendance is to set new records. Summer weather and a pool of 144 surfers including some of the best riders in the world created enough buzz to bring people from all around the Aquitaine region and beyond.

“The crowds so far have really been impressive. From the first day of the Pro Junior last week we had a lot of public at the beach and in our village right behind the site. It’s probably explained by the entertainment these surfers provide. We’re very lucky to have this amazing sand bank right in front of us. We usually have about 350 000 people visiting the site during our 10 days period and this year should be just as good!”

The Lacanau Pro has changed names many times since its introduction to the surfing world in 1978 but every edition brought a lot of attention and great memories. Cyril Camu gives us his best “souvenir” so far in Lacanau.

“We have so many great memories of this event, it’s one of the oldest in Europe. In 2001 for instance we had Parko (Joel Parkinson) and Jordy (Smith) in the finals with 6-8ft perfect barrelling waves and the public formed a 400m « Ola » along the beach that’s definitely one of the best moments ever.”

The next call is set for Sunday, August 21 at 10AM to assess the conditions and plan the final day of the ASP Sooruz Lacanau Pro.

The ASP 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro is scheduled from August 16 -21, 2011and will be LIVE web cast. For more information, and all upcoming results, photos, video highlights, press releases and LIVE webcast log-on to www.aspeurope.com
