ASP Top 17 Ready for Nike US Open of Surfing

Lakey Peterson (USA), 16, will be a wildcard in this year's Nike US Open of Surfing.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California / USA (Sunday, July 31, 2011) – The Nike US Open of Surfing will represent the final stop on the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title Series and while Carissa Moore (HAW), 18, has already wrapped up her maiden crown, the event will be especially important to surfers who are looking to retain their position among the elite ranks for 2012.

Courtney Conlogue (USA), 18, who is in a safe spot to return to the ASP Women’s World Title Series for 2012, has put together an impressive rookie season while learning the intricacies of the new locations on the ASP Women’s World Tour and hopes to finish the year off strong at her home event.

“This year the World Tour locations have all been new for me,” Conlogue said. “I’ve been studying and learning a lot. I haven’t had the results that I’d like to have but hopefully next year will be better. For some of the 6-Star locations I have surfed them before and my results reflected a better understanding of the breaks so that was great for me this year. I’m hoping to finish the year off strong.”

Conlogue, current No. 7 on the ASP Women’s World Title Series and leader on the ASP Women’s World Ranking, admitted that knowledge of the Huntington Beach Pier lineup can often be of little advantage, but hopes to rise to the occasion with the support of the local crowd behind her.

“It’s great having the support of the local community and I hope everyone comes out to enjoy the contest,” Conlogue said. “With regard to my experience at the pier, I don’t really know that it plays a part in the results all the time. The great thing about surfing is that the conditions are continually changing. It should be a great event!”

Laura Enever (AUS), 19, current No. 11 on the ASP Women’s World Title Series, knows that a standout performance will be required to rejoin the elite ranks for next season and is taking a confident approach to the event despite the pressure.

“I know this event is really important for my requalification, but I’m just trying to put that fact in the back of my head and just enjoy the event,” Enever said “Of course when I think about it, the pressure is still there, but I’m feeling confident!  Nike has also given me a wildcard spot into the Pro Junior event so I think that will take my mind of the World Tour event anyway. I do better when I’m not thinking so much and just surfing, so that’s my plan!”

Pauline Ado (FRA), 20, current No. 9 on the ASP Women’s World Title Series, is fresh off of her best result of the season in France, an equal 3rd place finish, and is hoping to carry the momentum to America to finish the year strong and secure her position among next year’s ASP Women’s World Title contenders.

“I’d like to continue and finish the year off strong,” Ado said. “Making the Semifinals was amazing and I secured a good result. It helped take some of the pressure off of this event, but hopefully I will do well here too.”

The women’s Nike US Open of Surfing runs alongside the men’s ASP PRIME event as well as men’s and women’s ASP Pro Junior competitions. The elite surfing contest is also part of a massive action sports festival which features BMX, Skateboarding, Music, Art and Fashion shows, all of which are free to the public.

The Women’s Nike US Open of Surfing holds a waiting period from August 1 – 7, 2011 and is webcast LIVE via www.usopenofsurfing.com
