Quarterfinalists Decided at ASP 1-Star Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana

Portuguese surfer Fredirico Morias has advanced into the Quarterfinals of the Billabong Sopelana Pro Junior.

Sopelana, Basque Country, Spain (Friday, July 29, 2011) ?

The ASP 1-Star Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana held another marathon day of competition which saw quarter-finalists decided in both men?s and women?s divisions. The level of surfing stepped into top gear as the top seeds did battle in building 3-4ft (1m) peaks. Glassy early morning off-shore conditions offered the pick of low tide waves for Europe?s top female athletes to display their wares while the men went head to head in the afternoon wind affected high tide peaks.

In the men?s division Alex Gironi (Gorliz, EUK) 19, local of Sopelana beach, secured his best result of the 2011 Pro Junior series with a tight win in his late afternoon heat. Surfing in front of his home crowd the young goofy footer waited patiently until the final seven minutes of the heat to open his account with a solid left. Backing up quickly with another excellent left, Gironi secured his pass into the final 16 surfers.

?You have to be very patient because the waves take a long time to come through now and it is also very important to catch the best waves. It took ages for a set  to come through and I didn?t feel as though I surfed them as well as I could but I got the scores and happy to make the heat.?

?It is an extra motivation to be surfing in front of my home crowd,? continued Gironi. ?I have had a pretty poor season so far I am not feeling any pressure at all. The locals are right behind me and now I have to do the best I can and see what happens.?

Current ASP Europe Pro Junior men?s ranking leader, Vasco Ribeiro (Praia da Poca, PRT) 17, was a shock elimination in Round Three on a day where strategies once again played a major role. Massive tidal movement meant a constantly shifting main peak and Ribeiro separated from his opponents to surf further up the beach but his plan backfired finishing in 3rd place to end his Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana campaign.

Despite the early exit, Ribeiro will still retain his leadership on the European Pro Junior rankings, where he holds a significant lead, even if one of his nearest rivals wins the Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana.

In the Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana women?s event top seeds dominated Round Two with current ASP Europe Pro Junior rankings leaders stealing the show with excellent displays of progressive surfing in the quality low tide conditions. Cannelle Bulard (REU) 17, Justine Dupont (FRA) 19, and Joanne Defay (REU) 19, all had outstanding heats as the race for this year?s Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana title heats up.

Bulard, currently 3rd on the ASP Europe Pro Junior rankings, secured top honours with the highest single and two-wave combined total of the day. Ripping apart a long left with several top-to-bottom forehand snaps earned the young goofy footer an excellent 8.93 out of ten. Together with her opening ride of 6.83, another quality left, Bulard totalled 15.76 to show her recent win last week has given her boosted confidence.

?The waves are really good fun now but they are a bit scarce at times. The lefts are fun for sure. My board was a little too small because the sets are bigger than it looks. From the beach it is hard to see what the waves are like but out the back you can feel the push of the waves. I am really keen to go for a free surf now.?

Justine Dupont (Lacanau, FRA) 19, produced another excellent performance in her Round Two appearance to amass a combined two-wave heat total of 15.34. Stoking into a large outside left, the multi-talented natural footer unleashed a flurry of backhand snaps and rail-carves to claim an 8.67 out of 10.

?I was watching the waves just before my heat and I spoke with Richard Marsh and I wasn?t sure if I would take two waves on the shore break and then go out the back. Then just before it started I saw a set so I went straight out the back and I think I did a good choice. I am sure that with the lower tide it will get even better.?

Dupont, one of the most experienced European juniors, used her calm, tactical approach to the heat and set out with a clear plan to seek out only the potentially high scoring waves. This combined with her extreme talent produced a comfortable pass through to the quarter-finals.

?On one of my waves it was great and not really fat at all. You can do your turns but you have to wait for the good ones. Sometimes you have to wait a long time but there are some waves for sure that can be found.?

The Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana provides crucial points for all surfers wishing to build on their rankings towards qualifying for the ASP World Junior Series which kicks off on October 3, in Bali Indonesia. Surfers are also out to lay claims on the added prize purse of 2000 Euros up for grabs offered by Surfing Euskadi for the overall best performer in both men?s and women?s divisions at the Billabong Pro Junior Sopelana and last week?s San Sebastian Pro Junior.
