Waitpinga Beach Delivers Great Waves for Day Two of Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior

WAITPINGA BEACHW, Fleurieu Peninsula / South Austrealia (Friday, 15 July, 2011) - PERFECT offshore winds and clean 1.5m (4 to 5 feet) surf made for an ideal day two at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior at Waitpinga Beach in South Australia today.

With so much at stake, the main players held their nerve in today?s good waves to advance through to final 16 surfers in both Pro Junior Men?s and Women?s divisions.

Current ratings leader Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay) squeaked through his round one heat yesterday but looked way more impressive today winning round two and defeating 16 year old emerging star Matt Banting.

?I?m starting to get used to the cold here with every surf so hopefully my heat scores similarly increase with each heat ? It?s tough surfing in such cold conditions having just come from Indonesia but I?m adjusting fast now? said Garrett.

?The lead see-sawed in that heat between Matt Banting and myself but I tend to try and just focus on the job of getting two great scoring waves and not think about who?s leading ? it can rattle your confidence and focus.?

Parkes ended up winning the heat on a scoreline of 13.50 to Banting on 12.80 calculated on each surfers top two scoring rides.

Like 12 other surfers at this event Parkes is very much in contention to win the ASP Australasian Pro Junior season ratings and also qualify for the ASP World Pro Junior Championship Series which begins in October in Bali (Top 4 Men?s and top 2 Women?s off the ratings will qualify).

?I?d love to win the ratings and qualify and it?s on my mind but really it?s a heat-by-heat thing here ? whoever wins will certainly qualify so I just have to focus on trying to win.?

Other contenders for the Junior Series Title to advance today included Thomas Woods (Gold Coast), Ryan Callinan (Newcastle), Dean Bowen (Gerroa/Sth Coast NSW), Matt Lewis-Hewitt (NZ) and Jordi Watson (Sth Coast NSW) to set the scene for what will be an tense finish to the season.

The girls also began their campaign today with top rated surfers Philippa Anderson (Newcastle) and Dimity Stoyle (Sunshine Coast) both convincingly winning their opening round heats. Little separates these two on the ratings and whoever performs best at this event will likely walk away with the Australasian Pro Junior Series Title for 2011.

Phillip Island surfer Nikki Van Dijk is presently 5th on the ratings and she looked in outstanding form posting an excellent 8 point ride and backing that up with a strong 7 point ride in her heat win over Keely Andrews (Mooloolaba/Sunshine Coast) who was also impressive in advancing to the final 16 in 2nd place.

Kirstin Ogden (Suffolk Park/NSW) was another to impress with a solid winning round one performance ? Ogden is fresh off a victory at the Rusty Gromfest in NSW and the 16 year-old talent looks extremely comfortable surfing at Pro Junior level.

Tomorrow should see more excellent waves at Waitpinga Beach for what could be the culmination to the ASP Australasian Pro Junior season for 2011 and Series champions crowned.

Past winners of the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series include the likes of Joel Parkinson, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and  Adrian Buchan which highlight just a few of the champions this series produces!
