Philippa Anderson Trumps Field At The 2011 Chill Pro Junior
TRIGG POINT, Perth WA/Australia (Friday, May 27, 2011) - Philippa Anderson wins the Chill Pro Junior presented by the City of Stirling at Trigg Point, Perth today, conquering her fellow competitors and the challenging 1 – 2 foot (1 meter) surf.
It was ladies first at the Chill Pro Junior today with the women hitting the water for Round 1, Quarters, Semis and Final. After the 2009 and 2010 Chill Pro Junior Champion Felicity Palmateer’s uncharacteristic early loss in Quarterfinal 4, Anderson came storming out of the gates all the way to the top of the podium.
“The final was weird because there wasn’t many waves coming through and there was the four of us sitting there waiting,” Anderson said. “I fell on a couple at the start, then got a 6 which got my confidence up and I took the lead. In the last 5 minutes I got another good wave I knew I’d won. It feels great!”
Anderson mastered the tricky two foot surf all day earning the two highest heat totals of the event, including 13.50 (out of a possible 20) in the final.
“I’m stoked that I won,” Anderson said. “I’ve been training hard because I go to Europe tomorrow for an ASP 6-Star event and I really want to do well. This event has given me confidence, even though the surf was small, I’m feeling good and I hope I can keep the roll going over there.”
Dimity Stoyle surfed fantastic all day but came up short in the final. Stoyle, the number one seed coming into this event had to settle for second place at the 2011 Chill Pro Junior.
“I’m pretty bummed to come so close to winning, then lose,” Stoyle said. “It’s still a good result to help me qualify for the ASP World Junior Championship later this year. We’re good friends (Stoyle and Anderson) and have fun. There is a bit of a rivalry between us, but it’s all in good fun.”
At the conclusion of the women’s event the men’s got underway. With precious points , prize-money and bragging rights on the line the boys were talking the talk at the Chill Pro Junior press conference this morning, starting with ratings leader Tom Woods (Gold Coast, QLD).
“There has always been a little bit of rivalry between myself and James (Woods, Tom’s Brother),”Tom said. “I want to beat him just as much as I want to beat everyone else.”
Garrett Parkes got a taste for winning earlier this year when he won his first Australasian Pro Junior event in Tahiti, and he’s hungry for number two.
“My goal for this competition is to hopefully get a win,” Parkes said. “I think that’s what everyone is here for. I will try to do well and of course have some fun and see what happens on the weekend.”
With a full day of men’s competition left to run and loads of talented, hungry competitors the stage is set for a great day of competition at the Chill Pro Junior presented by the City of Stirling tomorro w.
