Subaru Pro TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival ON HOLD Untill 12:30
TARANAKI, New Plymouth/New Zealand (Wednesday, April 27, 2011) – The TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival, the third stop on the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title season, has been put ON HOLD until 12h30 due to gale force winds that have battered the Taranaki region over the last 24 hours.
Surfers arriving in New Zealand yesterday, were unable to make their connecting flights to New Plymouth when all flights were canceled due to strong crosswinds of up to 120km/h that saw houses lose their roofs, power lines fall and vehicles were blown off the roads.
According to the New Zealand Met Service ‘The big storm is the result of a powerful southeasterly wind sandwiched between a slow-moving low close to Auckland and a large intense high over the South Island.’
Event organisers will spend the morning assessing conditions at the event’s various mobile locations including Back Beach and Stent Road in order to give the girls the best possible conditions for the commencement of Round 1.
“We have decided to put the event on hold while we access conditions at the various nearby breaks with the hope of getting Round 1 done today, in order to put ourselves in a better position for rest of week,” Dave Shipley, ASP International Women’s Head Judge, said. “With strong winds forecast until Friday we need to make the most of great one-meter swell that is on offer today.”
ASP World Tour rookie Tyler Wright, 17, (AUS) will take on former ASP World Champion Chelsea Hedges, 27, (AUS) and local surfer Paige Hareb, 20 (NZL) when Round 1 gets underway.
