Staples Excels in Difficult Conditions on Day 2 of The Quiksilver Pro Junior 2011

NEW PIER, Durban / South Africa (Saturday, April 23, 2011) – Small, testing surf made competition difficult on day 2 of the Quiksilver Pro Junior 2011 presented by the City of Durban. A fresh north easterly wind and 1-2 foot swell presented tricky conditions for the seeded surfers going into the round of 32.

Dale Staples (St Francis Bay) was on top form to gain the highest heat score of the day with a heat total of 17.07 out of a possible 20. Staples stamped his authority on his round of 16 heat early on with some explosive surfing in the tough conditions. Other standouts on day number two were David van Zyl (Durban North), Beyrick de Vries (Umhlanga) as well as Michael February of Cape Town. In the Quiksilver King of the Groms U16 division Slade Prestwich (Scottburgh) showed crowds the same form that saw him win the title in last year’s event. Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffrey’s Bay) continued to impress in the same division and dominated all of his heats sending out a warning signal to the rest of the competitors.

The event’s first and only female surfer Sarah Baum (Warner Beach) continued to impress by advancing in her round of 32 heat but eventually fell short in the final heat of the day by losing to an on form Michael February (Cape Town) and former Durbanite Matt Pallet who now resides in Cape Town.

“The waves were very difficult for the juniors today but there were some definite standouts. The guys that were riding the right boards and reading the waves properly were the guys getting the big scores,” said event commentator Stanley Badger.

Competition resumes at 8:00am on Easter Sunday with the Pro Junior quarter finals. The finals of all four age groups start at 12:40. The Quiksilver Pro Junior and Quiksilver King of the Groms awards ceremony will take place at 14:45pm after the finals at the event site.

All photos, videos, results and more can be found at the event’s website: www.quikprojunior.co.za as well as www.facebook.com/quiksilver.

The Quiksilver Pro Junior and King of the Groms is presented by Durban and other sponsors include Independent on Saturday, Skullcandy, SuperSport, Bokomo, Red Bull, Nescafe and Nestle Pure Life Water.
