ASP 6-Star Action Hits Europe for O’Neill CWC Scotland Starting Wednesday

Scotland's Brims Ness Peak, the site for the 2011 O'Neill Cold Water Classic.

CAPBRETON, France(Monday, April 11, 2011) – First event of the 2011 ASP European Star Series, the ASP 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic (CWC) Scotland will see its sixth edition start Wednesday in Thurso, Northern Scotland, and run through a seven-day waiting period of intense action.

The coldest event on tour, the O’Neill CWC Scotland takes the ASP caravan back to the land of Lords, freezing 7°C waters and fantastic high-performance waves of Thurso’s renowned surf area already set to greet some of the world’s best surfers. Considered as much an adventure as a regular professional surfing event, the 96-man field of athletes will be eager to capturing the coveted winner’s trophy, a true Lords’ sword that has become one of the most prestigious trophies on the ASP World Tour.

“ASP Europe is once again grateful to all partners and O’Neill for bringing this fantastic event back in Europe and Scotland,” ASP European manager Greg Puget said. “Since it started in 2006, the O’Neill CWC Scotland has been a success every year and continues to attract some of the world’s best competitors.”

With a variety of waves on offer and a fully mobile structure set to take the attending contingent to the area’s best surf location day after day through the waiting period, the 2011 edition promises another exciting event. From Thurso East’s world class right-hand point break to Brims Ness’ testing barrels, the O’Neill CWC Scotland 2011 is set to deliver world class surfing.

“It’s always exciting to head North knowing the wave quality and prestige of the CWC Series,” ASP European Tour Manager Rob Gunning said. “It takes more than excellent surfing to get a hold of the Sword, and athletes have to adapt to some of the most extreme conditions on the ASP World Tour.”

“We have 96 men enrolled including defending event champion Royden Bryson (Durban, ZAF),” continued Gunning. “European top surfers Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK) and Gony Zubizarreta (Vigo, ESP) as well as reigning ASP European Junior champion Charles Martin (Guadeloupe, FRA) and many more. A great field ready to battle in great fashion.”

Defending champion and former ASP Elite member Royden Bryson will try and achieve what no other has yet, a second consecutive O’Neill CWC Scotland title meaning valuable rankings points en route to a possible ASP Elite Top 32 qualification.

“It feels absolutely fantastic to return to Scotland and the Thurso area again this year. I have been in all the editions so far and last year I won so it is definitely a special place for me.”

“The forecast for swell is looking insane for Wednesday,” continued Bryson. “We should have off-shore winds and waves in the 4-5ft range at Thurso East. I am really looking forward to it.”

On his chances of making history with a second O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland title Bryson feels confident but knows there is a lot of hard work ahead before reaching the winner’s podium for a second time.

“I am just going to take it one heat at a time the same as I always do and focus on the job at hand and not get too far ahead of myself. To win back-to-back titles would be amazing.”

The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland is scheduled from April 13 -19, 2011. For more information, and all upcoming results, photos, video highlights, press releases and LIVE webcast log-on to http://www.oneill.com/cwc/Scotland.html or www.aspeurope.com
