Boukiam Leads Unstoppable Top Seeds on Day 1 of Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior

TROIS BASSINS, Reunion Island (Saturday, April 9, 2011) – Opening event on this year’s ASP European Junior Series, the ASP 3-Star Men’s Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior got underway today in clean three-foot (one-meter) waves at Trois-Bassins, a thousand fans gathering under the beating sun to enjoy the spectacle.

In its inaugural edition and marking the return of the ASP caravan on Reunion Island’s idyllic surf breaks, the Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior got into serious action from Day 1, top seeds stamping their authority over the 60-man field of athletes to advance through to Round 2 of competition.

Leading the hungry pack of Under-21 surfers, Moroccan Ramzi Boukiam (Agadir, MAR) opened his twenty-five minute battle with a solid 7.00 point ride before wrapping-up his run with a solid 8.00 pointer and take the day’s top performance.

“It’s good to get back in the water after several weeks of injury, and win that second heat of the event,” Boukiam said. “I am not expecting anything special as this event just marks my return to competition and I will take it slowly and try and advance.”

ASP European Junior No. 3 last year, Boukiam stepped-up amongst the ranks of Under-21 professional surfing and qualified for the ASP World Junior Tour in 2010 where he finished No. 30. Back on the European series and hungrier than ever to get back to his best, the only Moroccan in the event will be a serious threat for his peers.

Event top seed and longtime ASP European Junior Top 10 member, Pierre-Valentin Laborde (Hossegor, FRA) left no chance to his Round 1 opponents, the experienced competitor confirming his free-surf impressive performance from yesterday to advance comfortably ahead of Nelson Cloarec (Hossegor, FRA).

Laborde, a former ASP World Junior No. 5 and still chasing his first event win on the ASP European Junior Series, made his intentions clear since he landed on Reunion Island, training hard and speding time in the water to get in rhythm with the location and conditions.

“It’s great to get back into competitive mode and get that first heat out of the way,” Laborde said. “The waves dropped compared to yesterday and it wasn’t that easy to get the better ones but I found what I needed, and got through.”

Much expected by local crowds and renowned for his fast tube riding abilities, local Kieran Bulard (REU) followed the footsteps of his peers to secure the second best run of the local contingent behind other local star and second seed Medi Veminardi (REU).

“It’s so amazing to be able to compete in front of all my friends and family and I was super stoked to get the rash guard on and paddle out,” Bulard said. “It’s not an easy wave and it was small but I was able to catch a couple of good ones and I am looking forward to the next round.”

Advancing today were Top Guns Frederico Morais (Ericeira, PRT), Tom Neuschwanger (REU), Tom Cloarec (FRA) and Vasco Ribeiro (Carcavelos, PRT).
