World’s Best Surfers Descend on Newcastle for the 2011 Burton Toyota Surf Festival
Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, will be the top seed at the upcoming ASP 4-Star Burton Toyota Surf Festival in Newcastle.
NEWCASTLE, Australia (Monday, March 14, 2011) – A blockbuster field of surfers that includes Taj Burrow, Bede Durbidge, Sally Fitzgibbons, Coco Ho and Travis Logie are certain to draw huge crowds to the famous Merewether Beach in Newcastle for this year’s Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Legendary Pacific Coast Women’s Pro and 4 Star Men’s Burton Toyota Pro.
Newcastle’s annual gathering of many of the world’s top surfers has become an institution in surfing in Australia and the event is an absolute favourite for the surfers who enjoy the hospitality of Newcastle’s rich surf culture.
Taj Burrow comes to this event fresh off his outstanding 2nd placing at the opening event of the ASP World Title event on the Gold Coast last week.
“I love Newy, I haven’t been back in a few years but I’m pretty pumped to get up there – Everything is feeling pretty good right now, I’ve got a couple of epic sleds under my feet and I feel like I’m on a bit of a roll and hopefully I can keep it going” said Taj today.
Almost all who witnessed Taj’s form believe the 32 year-old is in career best form and in the unique man-on-man format applied to this event from the round of 64 onward is certain to suit the lightning fast surfer from West Australia.
A strong southerly wind charge came through Newcastle this afternoon with a likelihood of a fresh swell for tomorrow’s opening day.
“We have an excellent sand bank out the front of the main event site and the swell outlook at this stage looks good for the entire week so I’m confident we’re in for a great event” said event director Warren Smith.
With six star points and $35 000 up for grabs the Legendary Pacific Coast Pro 6 Star Women’s event will be critical to qualification aspirations of most of the field.
Australia’s dynamic youngsters Tyler Wright, Laura Enever and Sally Fitzgibbons will be favoured here and keen to continue their excellent start to the 2011 season by notching up a win.
