Gabriel Medina Scores Perfect 10 to Earn Wildcard into Boost Mobile SurfSho
BONDI BEACH, New South Wales/Australia (Friday, March 11, 2011) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Specialty Rated Boost Mobile SurfSho presented by BlackBerry was off to a flying start today with Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina taking out the top prize in the Junior Trials. The win lands him a wildcard place in Sunday’s Boost Mobile SurfSho final and he also takes home $1000 cash and a Boost Mobile Blackberry.
Gabriel Medina (BRA), launching his way into the ASP Specialty Boost Mobile SurfSho main event.
Gabriel continually impressed the judges throughout the day by perfectly executing a forehand air reverse and almost pulled off one of the most difficult surfing maneuvers – the rodeo flip. Gabriel then surfed his way to victory in spectacular fashion, taking out the final heat ahead of Gold Coast surfer Thom Pringle.
The Brazilian teenager is now a serious threat to world-champion surfers Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith, Owen Wright, Josh Kerr and Julian Wilson who are just some of the surfers competing in Sunday’s main aerial competition.
Following the Boost Mobile SurfSho launch today, Owen Wright and Jack Freestone provided a taste of the aerial action to come over the free three-day event at the tow-in expression session. Pro-skateboarder and TV personality Corbin Harris also joined the panel of surfers at the launch as he prepares to take them on in Saturday’s celebrity surfing challenge.
The Boost Mobile SurfSho presented by BlackBerry will continue over the weekend with the most exciting aerial surfers from across the globe competing on Bondi’s famous waves. Alongside the spectacular surfing action, the Boost Mobile SurfSho will feature a live concert on both days with Nat Cole and the Kings headlining on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday’s program will feature open trials throughout the day. Don’t miss the Celebrity Surfing Challenge at 12pm with Danny Green, Luke Mitchell & David Jones-Roberts (both from Home & Away), Corbin Harris, Lauryn Eagle and Braith Anasta, competing with the pro-surfers for the chance to win $5,000 for the winning teams nominated charity.
