Massive Increase in Women’s Prize Money Announced for Winner of ASP 6-Star Telstra Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River
MARGARET RIVER, Western Australia (Friday, March 4, 2011) - SURFING WA today announced an enormous increase in the Women’s prize money for the 2011 Telstra Drug Aware Pro to be held at Margaret River this April 3-10.
The winner of this year’s Women’s ASP 6-Star event will receive $15,000 – an amount now equal to the winner’s cheque at the top Women’s ASP World Title events. The increase is more than $10,000 over last year’s event.
The continued growth in women’s surfing has been made possible due to the long term support of naming rights partner Healthway via their Drug Aware message. Since 1993, Healthway has supported surfing in Western Australia from elite competition level to juniors learning to surf. During this period, their commitment has totaled over $3 million promoting both the SunSmart and Drug Aware messages.
Healthway’s Chairperson, Associate Professor Rosanna Capolingua commented; “The Telstra Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River is the major world class competition for professional surfers and Healthway supports this event because of its ability to increase young people’s awareness of alcohol and other drugs and the dangers associated with recreational drug use. Due to the popularity of the Margaret River Pro surfing event, the Drug Aware message is now widely recognised by young surfing fans.”
It is expected that the increase in prize money will attract the best field of women surfers ever seen at Margaret River. A full list of competitors will be announced after March 8 when registrations officially close. For more information, visit
