BURLEIGH HEADS, Queensland/Australia (Friday, March 4, 2011) – The ASP International Judging Panel is comprised of the keenest eyes in the surfing world. With the unparalleled ability to distinguish “good surfing” from “great surfing” these champions of the sport soldier from event to event, putting in the longest hours, making the toughest calls and, ultimately, determining the undisputed ASP World Champion. Victoria’s Richard Porta sits at the head of the judging table this year and Australia’s Surfing Life (ASL) magazine caught up with the shot-caller to pick the brain of the man who wields the unholy power of scoring the world’s best surfing. Something happened in the Roxy Pro’s first round last Saturday: The scores went through the roof. This was because of a minor tweak to the girls’ format, which meant that instead of surfing to avoid third place in the heat, they were surfing for a win. The result? Tyler Wright racked up the highest score of the first round in both men’s and women’s, and was closely followed by Sally Fitzgibbons and Silvana Lima.

Simply: the girls began to stretch their envelope.
