Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, on his way to a Round 1 victory at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Monday, February 28, 2011) – The 2011 men’s and women’s ASP Dream Tour has fired off the opening round of competition at this year’s season opener, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover and with the majority of both the events remaining this week is set to be an exciting one in the world of ASP competition.

Round 1 of the Quiksilver Pro saw impressive performances by defending event champion Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, who slayed the highest heat-total of 16.67 out of 20 while two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, capitalized on his intimate knowledge of Snapper Rocks to snag the day’s highest single-wave score of 9.33.

Also marching to early round victories were reigning 10-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 39, and 2010 ASP World Runner-up Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23, while Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, led the rookie class.

On the side of the Roxy Pro, lethal ASP Women’s World Tour rookie Tyler Wright (AUS), 16, made a big statement in her first official heat among the Top 17 by detonating the Rounds highest single wave scores of a 9.03 and a 8.93 to relegate reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, to Round 2.

Also starting strong was 2010 ASP Women’s World Runner-Up Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 20, progressive Brazilian Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, and young Hawaiian Carissa Moore (HAW), 18.

Daily calls will be made to assess conditions to run the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast, both of which hold a waiting period from February 26 to March 9, 2011 to capitalize on optimal conditions.
