Epic Conditions for ASP LQS 6-Star Huanchaco Longboard Pro in Peru
HUANCHACO, Trujillo / Peru (Thursday, January 27, 2011) - The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) 6-Star Huanchaco Longboard Pro Peru continued today in clean five foot (1.5 metre) waves in Peru, with some of the world’s finest longboarders reveling in the classic conditions.
“It’s like a dream come true for a surf contest with light offshore winds and classic 5 foot waves,” said Klaus Kaiser, Tour Manager of ASP South America Longboard Series 2011, on the surfing conditions for the second day of the Huanchaco Longboard Pro at Playa El Elio in Trujillo, northern Peru.
The Brazilian Marcelo Freitas was again the highlight of the day on this Thursday, winning the two heats he competed. In Freitas’ second heat, where he faced some of the event’s top seeds, Freitas won his bout over 2009 South American champion André Luiz Deka, who finished in second while eliminating 10-time Brazilian champion Picuruta Salazar.
The conditions were perfect for a Longboard event, with long walls allowing for all kinds of classic and modern maneuvers throughout the morning and early afternoon, but a heavy fog rolled in in Round 3, forcing event organizers to call competition off for the remainder of the day.
The first heat of the day was top notch with Brazilian Danilo Rodrigo scoring 15.20 points, the highest heat-total of the day. Marcelo Freitas continued his form in the next round, placing a strong total score of 14.25 points (out of 20).
The Hawaiian Kai Sallas also made a great presentation on the final Round 2 heat, reaching 15.10 points to overcome 2010 ASP South American Longboard Runner up, Jefson Silva, who finished in second, leaving Peruvian Jose Ramos in third.
Round 3 saw the top 16 seeded Longboarder start competing and the first two surfers to debut in the first heat were Rio’s Andre Luis Deka and Sao Paulo’s Paulo Giachetti against Marcelo Freitas and Picuruta Salazar both also from Brazil.
Marcelo Freitas stood out once again, showing a good mix of maneuvers, always surfing in the most critical parts of the wave. With a combined score of 15 points he kept his still title hopes alive. Andre Luis Deka placed second also advancing to the Round of 16 best in the running for the Huanchaco Longboard Pro Title.
Competition is expected to resume tomorrow morning, Friday.
