Holding Period Continues for Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons

Flat surf and stormy skies have forced competition off again at the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons.

PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Sunday, December 12, 2010) – The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the third jewel of the prestigious Vans Triple Crown (as ASP Specialty Series), has been called off for the fourth consecutive day with only minimal one-to-two foot (0.5 metre) surf continuing to plague the infamous Banzai Pipeline.

“The flat spell here at Pipeline has continued, so unfortunately we’ll have to call the contest off again today,” Richie Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “It’s looking like we have a better angled swell on the way for Wednesday, but we’ll still return tomorrow morning to evaluate the conditions.”

The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons saw competition launch into action on the opening day of the waiting period with reigning two-time Vans Triple Crown Champion and current series leader Joel Parkinson (AUS), 29, moving one step closer to clinching his third Hawaiian trifecta title by advancing out of his Round 2 heat.

Parkinson will continue his quest for the Vans Triple Crown title when he takes on lethal ASP World Tour rookie Owen Wright (AUS), 20, in Heat 2 of Round 3.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be defending Billabong Pipe Master Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, up against Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 22, in the opening heat of Round 3.

Surfline, official forecasters of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, are calling for small surf to prevail over the next two days, with a better angled swell expected to bring Pipeline back to life as early as Wednesday.
