Lay Day for Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 29, will look to clinch his third Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown Title when Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons competition resumes.

PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Friday, December 10, 2010) – Competition for the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the third and final jewel of the Vans Triple Crown (an ASP Specialty Series), has been called off for a second consecutive day today with virtually no surf on offer at Pipeline.

With the ASP World Title having been decided in Puerto Rico, the focus at the Billabong Pipe Masters now turns to the prestigious Vans Triple Crown, and two-time trifecta champion Joel Parkinson (AUS), 29, will look to secure his third Hawaiian series title when competition resumes.

“As predicted, the surf has dropped substantially and we’ll have to call the contest off again today,” Richie Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “We’re expecting a few bad days of weather and small surf, but are tracking a potential swell for next week that will hopefully have us back up and running. That said, we’ll be back tomorrow morning to assess condition.”

With the majority of the 2011 ASP Dream Tour roster having been decided, Maui’s Dusty Payne (HAW), 21, will need to overtake two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, in their Round 3 matchup to retain his position within the ASP Top 34. If Payne should win, it will bump Floridian Gabe Kling (USA), 30, off of the elite tour.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be defending Billabong Pipe Master Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, up against Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 22, in the opening heat of Round 3.

Surfline, official forecasters of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, are calling for foul weather and small surf to prevail over the next few day

Andy Irons (1978 – 2010), three-time ASP World Champion and four-time Pipeline Masters Champion, tragically passed away on November 2nd of this year. A final celebration dedicated to the life and achievements of Andy Irons will be held in conjunction with the Billabong Pipe Masters and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, on Saturday, December 11th, at Pipeline at 10am. The tribute will include a paddle-out by competitors in the Billabong Pipe Masters.
