O’Neill Women’s World Cup is Off, Men’s ASP PRIME is ON

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii (Wednesday, December 1, 2010) – The O’Neill Women’s World Cup of Surfing is off again today, but the men’s ASP PRIME action will hit the water with heats running at both Sunset and Kammies to capitalize on the building swell on offer.

Stop No. 8 of 8 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, the O’Neill Women’s World Cup represents the second jewel of the prestigious Vans Triple Crown, with reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, currently leading the ASP Specialty Series after her victory at the Cholo’s Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa.

“We’re expecting this small swell to build throughout the day and will be running dual banks for the men’s competition to get through as many heats as possible,” Richie Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “It’s not ideal, but with no swell to speak of in the remainder of the waiting period, we have to capitalize on the swell available and are expecting to crown both men’s and women’s champions by tomorrow afternoon.”

Up first will be former ASP Women’s World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 26, Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, Bruna Schmitz (BRA), 20, and event wildcard Tyler Wright (AUS), 16, in Quarterfinals Heat No. 1 when competition resumes.

The O’Neill Women’s World Cup, which runs in conjunction with the ASP PRIME O’Neill World Cup of Surfing holds a waiting period from November 24 through December 6, 2010 and is webcast LIVE via http://www.triplecrownofsurfing.com/oneillworldcup/
