Competition Called Off for O’Neill Women’s World Cup of Surfing

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii (Friday, November 26, 2010) – A lay day has been called for the O’Neill Women’s World Cup of Surfing with only small two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf at Sunset Beach.

Stop No. 8 of 8 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, the O’Neill Women’s World Cup will see several competitors look to establish themselves as frontrunners for the Vans Triple Crown title while the event is also a make-or-break contest for several women looking to requalify for the 2011 ASP Dream Tour.

“The surf has dropped and we don’t feel that we have contestable conditions to resume the contest today,” Richie Porta, O’Neill Women’s World Cup Head Judge said. “We’ll be back to assess the conditions early tomorrow morning to potentially resume the event.”

The opening day of the O’Neill Women’s World Cup saw the world’s best female surfers tear into cracking six-to-eight foot (2 metre) surf at Sunset Beach with the event’s top seeds starting strong in the event’s unique four-man format.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning, Saturday, at 6:30am local time for a potential 8am start.

Surfline, official forecasters for the Vans Triple Crown are calling for a slight bump in swell to increase overnight to potentially allow competition to recommence as early as tomorrow morning.
