Is the ASP World Title Race Over? Jordy Smith Injury UPDATE from Santa Cruz

Is Jordy Smith out of the 2010 ASP World Title Race?

SANTA CRUZ, California/USA (Friday, October 22, 2010) – As we approach the Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico, the surfing world has set its collective gaze upon the ASP World Title Race between Kelly Slater (USA), 38, and Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22. While Slater, the former nine-time ASP World Champion, holds a commanding lead in the hunt for the crown, Smith’s comprehensive approach and new-found consistency make him a major threat throughout the remaining two events.

However, tragedy nearly struck yesterday in Northern California where Smith was in attendance for the ASP PRIME O’Neill Cold Water Classic at Steamer Lane. At a charity dodgeball event for the Santa Cruz youth, Smith rolled his ankle, went down and the surfing world gasped.

Absent from his morning heat this morning, we did catch up with O’Neill’s Director of Sports Marketing, Garth Tarlow, at Steamer Lane to get the official word.

“Jordy rolled his ankle last night at a charity event in Santa Cruz,” Garth Tarlow, O’Neill’s Director of Sports Marketing, said. “He’s withdrawn from the O’Neill Cold Water Classic to prevent further injury to his ankle. The injury is not a bad one, and the official diagnosis is a minor ankle sprain. We just want to be sure that he’s 100% healed for Puerto Rico.”

So there you have it – Jordy is currently recovering, the ASP World Title Race is still on and we’re off to Puerto Rico next week.
