Brazilian Semifinalists Decided at ASP 6-Star Supersurf Internacional

FLORIANOPOLIS, Santa Catarina/Brazil (Saturday, October 02, 2010) – The day started like a grey picture with a tiny rain that insisted to follow all morning, the waves were looking good at the start in the 3–5 feet range, but as the day progressed the winds shift from mid to strong southwest (off to cross shore) to a Hurricane like southeast for the last heats. And with this scenery took place the Round of 16 and the quarter finals, and believe it or not they all smashed it.

Gabriel Medina, 16, led the attack of the new generation with the highlight of the day – 9.0 pts ride – in an “double grab” air. But Ricardo Santos, 20, made the highest combined score of 16.43 points. Medina is still the absolute record holder and will face Simao Romao, 24, in the first semifinal at 8 pm on Sunday at Florianopolis. Ricardo takes Bernardo Miranda, 27, in the second duel of the last day of the ASP 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional.

Turned sensational in the final minutes scored the batteries more exciting Saturday night and very cold southerly winds in the capital of Santa Catarina. In the first contest by rating for Sunday, was an incredible turn-turn in the final seconds. Michel Roque went ahead with a score of 7.90 on the wave front, but behind the Simao Romao used the force of his backside to have beaten and torn playing a lot of water. He managed an 8.27 to confirm the win by 13.94 x 13.23 points.

“Michel (Roque) is a good friend of mine, we traveled together to Hawaii with 14, 15 years old, also to the Brazilian Amateur championships and I told him that if he had won I’d also be happy. But that wave came to me at the very end of the heat and I’ll never forget this clash with my friend,” said Simao Romao, one of the finalists who have won a WQS event at Praia do Santinho in 2007.

Next he will face Gabriel Medina, a strong favorite for the title of the SuperSurf Internacional. In his first heat Wednesday, the wonder boy of Maresias set new records this year on the SuperSurf Series, an 9,5 score for a tube ride in the last and a combined score  of 18.43 pts. The next day, he set a new record for a single score of 9.93 pts for an air “Kerrupt Flip”. And on Saturday, has posted again the day’s highlight with another of its air arsenal international surfer in the championship, the South African Brandon Jackson.

“It was very difficult to find good waves out there today with this wind, but thankfully I made it into the semis and I’m stoked,” said Gabriel Medina. “I’ll meet Romao in the semi final, and it won’t be easy, but I will try to show my surfing again. Hopefully the winds will be lighter tomorrow (Sunday). Today, besides the wind it has a strong current out there, but everything went well and I’m super happy to be in the last day of the championship”.

Ricardo dos Santos is the lone surfer from Santa Catarina to qualify for the semifinals wining the heat over Heitor Alves. He won two consecutive 6 Stars of the “European leg” in Spain and Portugal.

“Actually, Hector is my inspirational surfer right now,” confessed Ricardo. “I’ve been watching him a lot. He’s capable of throwing the best airs anytime, so I knew I needed good waves to win two. I was lucky that the wave came in the dying seconds of the heat, and I confidently believed I could turn the heat”.

In the opening heat on Sunday Ricardo faces Bernardo Miranda, owner of the Friday’s highlight. “I’m glad I’ve found good waves in today’s heats, conditions are very hard with strong southerly winds, the heat was decided at the end, I scored a 6.0 on my last ride, just enough to advance to the semi finals”, said Bernardo Miranda. “Everybody is surfing good, Gabriel (Medina), the Simao (Romao), Ricardo (Santos), and I, so let’s see who finds the best waves to win the heats tomorrow (Sunday), hopefully with less wind and good waves for everyone.”
