Bernardo Miranda Shines at ASP 6-Star Supersurf Internacional

FLORIANOPOLIS, Santa Catarina/Brazil (Friday, October 01, 2010) –  Everybody was expecting lots of wind this Friday, but the weather stayed calm and friendly. This allowed for a tremendously good day of surfing competition and taking advantage of this the surfer from Brazilian Bernardo Miranda closed the Friday with the best performance of the day in very good 3-5 foot waves at Praia do Santinho.

Bernardo scored a 9.27 at his first wave at the day’s last heat and also had the best combined score of 14.94 pt on round of 24 of the SuperSurf Internacional. The experienced Peterson Rosa also ripped to qualify for round of 16 surfers which will open Saturday’s competition. The standout of the previous two days, Gabriel Medina won another heat and moved to the next round. Along with him advanced the only international surfer who still in the competition in Florianopolis, the South African Brandon Jackson.

“That’s good to know that I was the best today,” said Bernardo Miranda. “I knew that set wave was going to be good. I took off and after a long bottom turn I did a big first turn followed by an even bigger close out reentry, which made me more relaxed on the heat. It is not easy to compete against Peterson (Rosa), and Jean (Da Silva) is another guy who surfs a lot, but everything went right for me and I am very happy. Today was another day of great waves here and I’m dying to get back into the water to get more”.

Peterson Rosa, 36, is the most experienced surfer among the sixteen finalists and risked everything for scored 7.33 pts with two very strong backside turns in your last wave. His opponent in the Round of 16 is Jeronimo Vargas, a talented young surfer of Brazil’s new surfing generation.

“I think experience doesn’t count for much and now I’m even more nervous than when I was 21, 22; times when I used to compete just to surf and have fun,” said Peterson Rosa. “I know I don’t need to prove anything to anyone, but we’re always looking to improve, then it rolls that adrenaline, nervousness, and anxiety, everything like when I was still a beginner and this is what motivates me to keep competing.”

The first surfers to qualify for Saturday’s clash were Pedro Henrique and Simao Romao, who placed the first excellent score of this Friday, a 9.27pts, by smashing a 2 meters left hander. Of all the finalists, Simao is the only one who has already won an ASP WQS event at Santinho Beach, in 2007.

“I’m so happy, very focused, always looking out to sea to see where I will position myself, the board is good and the waves are coming for me in the heats,” said Romao. “I like this place, where I had one of the best moments of my life when I won that final I competed with my friend Pablo (Paulino). It seems I’m lucky here; I’m staying in a friend’s house, what a peaceful place”.

While Simao can clinch his second win in Florianopolis, Heitor Alves is on the search for a third consecutive title in an ASP 6 Star event. He was the champion of the last two contests of the “European Leg” in Spain and Portugal.

“The waves today (Friday) are very good and I’m motivated by two straight wins, it had never happened in my life, and I’m looking for another title here to get the chance to qualify for the Dream Tour “, said Heitor Alves, who will now face Pablo Paulino in the fifth heat of the day.

Gabriel Medina enters the third heat facing Charlie Brown. He did not shine as much as on other days, but did some airs, up to two on the same wave to win his heat with the South African Brandon Jackson in second place.

“I’m stoked to move through to one more round”, said Brandon Jackson. “Everybody knows how good Gabriel Medina is and Marco Giorgi is also a very talented surfer who lives in Brazil. Now I got to the man-to-man rounds and I hope to keep advancing towards the final.”
