Kolohe Andino Faces Off Against Slater as Hurley Pro Trestles Wildcard

Can Kolohe stick it to Slater and the rest of the ASP Top 34 at the Hurley Pro Trestles?

SAN CLEMENTE, California/USA (Wednesday, September 8, 2010) – With a history of lethal wildcards entering the Hurley Pro Trestles over the years, 2010 is slated to be no different with local prodigy Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA), 16, making his first career ASP Dream Tour appearance as one of this year’s Hurley Pro Trestles wildcards at his home break of Lower Trestles, where he will face off against iconic nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, FL), 38, and Luke Stedman (AUS), 34, in Round 1.

The Hurley Pro Trestles, stop No. 6 of 10 on the ASP Dream Tour, is Mainland America’s only ASP World Title event and the contest plays a vital role in all competitors’ quests for the ASP World Title.

Andino, who has built a name for himself amongst the world’s finest up-and-comers, has the potential to join the list of dangerous competitors who have found success on the ASP Dream Tour stage after marquee performances as wildcards in past years at Trestles including Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA), 24, and current ASP World No. 1 Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, but the young talent remains humble in being mentioned in the same class as his idols.

“I’m psyched to have a wildcard position at the Hurley Pro,” Andino said. “Surfers like Dane (Reynolds) and Jordy (Smith) have been wildcards in this event before and they have done really well. Although I don’t have the same expectations as their results, I’m still stoked to be put in the same category as them.”

The inventive regular-footer is also thrilled to compete in his first elite event at his home break of Lower Trestles as a wildcard.

“If I could do one ASP Dream Tour event it would be at Trestles,” Andino said. “It’s such a privilege that Hurley has given me the wildcard into this event and I’m pretty freaked out to even be in this contest.”

Andino, who hopes to qualify for the ASP Dream Tour in the coming years, is out to get a taste of his dream of competing amongst the globe’s finest surfers while enjoying his first event as a wildcard amongst the elite.

“I’d like to make the tour (ASP Dream Tour) when I’m around 19 or 20,” Andino said. “I’m stoked to get the chance to see what it feels like to compete at that level and to get a taste of it. I’m really looking forward to the event and just want to enjoy it.”

The Hurley Pro Trestles holds a waiting period from September 12 through 18, 2010 and will be webcast LIVE via www.hurley.com/hurleypro/
