WCT - Marlon Lipke

Marlon Lipke: from the ASP World Qualifying Series to the Dream Tour
Interview with the first German surfer ever to surf among the ASP Top 45

Photo: Marlon Lipke (DEU) getting covered during the ASP WQS 6-Star Prime Rip Curl Pro at Hossegor where he placed 3rd, his best result in 2008

CAPBRETON, France (Friday, January 9, 2008)

Marlon Lipke (DEU), 24, became the first German surfer ever to qualify for the ASP World Tour in 2008 after a year of consistent performances that led him to rank No. 16 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS). Lipke, who finished the year one spot outside the qualifiers' group, was awarded a wildcard by the ASP surfers rewarding him for all his efforts and results throughout the year. Lipke will start cutting his teeth against the world's best surfers February 28 at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia, along with a record six other European surfers led by French phenomenon Jeremy Flores (FRA), the biggest contingent ever to hit the tour and possibly confirm Europe's new status as a leading nation of the sport. We caught up with Marlon for an interview on his year and the nerve-testing Hawaiian showdown before he was awarded the wildcard by his peers.

Age: 24
Resides: Algarve, Portugal
Sponsors: Hurley, Oakley, Vans, Nixon, X-Markets and Semente
2008 Highlights: 3rd ASP WQS 6-Star Prime Rip Curl Pro, 5th ASP WQS 5-Star Rip Curl Boardmasters, 5th ASP WQS 6-Star US Open of Surfing, 5th ASP WQS 6-Star Yumeya Billabong Pro...

1. Before anyhting, how does it feel to be invited by the surfers on next year's ASP Top 45?

It feels great, it's just amazing. It's like a dream coming true. It's even better the way it happend because I was just outside the ASP WQS Top 15 so I had already put it behind me. But at the last moment, I got the news from my brother. It will remain one of the best days of my life.

2. The Hawaiian events must have been very hard for you, dropping from No. 9 to 16 in a couple of events? How did you live through this ?

I super stoked going to Hawaii ranked No. 9 but I had already worked out that the rest of the top guys could quickly push me out of the qualifiers' group. Then it started in Haleiwa at the Reef Hawaiian Pro. I didn't do well and all the guys behind me kept getting through and I dropped back to No. 15 at the end of the event, the last spot to qualify. But I knew Phil MacDonald (AUS) who was right behind me, would only need to place 3rd in his heat at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing to push me definitely out. It was a very hard time, I was very sad after Haleiwa and it took me a few days to come out of this testing time. I had Pat O'Connell, Greg Martin and Jay Thompson (AUS) supporting me a lot and they helped me get ready and amped for Sunset. We had massive waves there and I missed out the cut by very little but I was still happy with my surf in the big conditions. I actually really enjoyed it but I knew the Dream Tour was definitely gone for me so it did affect me.

3. 2008 was your best year ever on the ASP World Qualifying Series. What's the feeling after such a competitive year?

I had a tough time in 2007 with bad results on the international stage eventhough some wins in smaller European events and I finished the year with no sponsor. So I was in this state of mind where you want to give the maximum and just unleash and enjoy the tour. It ended up well for me with 2008 turning into my best year ever, great results and on top of that, so much fun all year long. It couldn't have been any better actually!

4. You are the first German surfer ever to qualify for the ASP World Tour, does it mean a lot ?

I haven't really thought about that yet. I don't even realize I really will be surfing on the ASP World Tour this year. I think it will take a bit more time until I get the bigger picture and start feeling it more realisticly. But it is something unbelievable for sure, for German surfing, Portuguese surfing (Marlon was raised and lives in the South of Portugal) and European surfing with seven of us being on tour. It is just amazing.

5. Any plan to prepare the big start on the Gold Coast ?

This is something else I haven't thought about yet but I believe I will get the usual things going and some serious training with my mate Gony Zubizarreta (ASP WQS Top 50 surfer) and our coach Sylvain Frei. I think I have to work on a whole new quiver and think about changing my approach and surfing a bit. I can't really say what direction I need to go but I have a couple of months to find out so no panic.

6. Putting so much energy into your career and missing out by one spot. What do you learn from this?

I felt very bad the way it ended because it seems like that No. 16 rank is the hardest one to live with. But I kept thinking about it and felt like afterall, that position would give me the opportunity to surf a few ASP World Tour events in 2009 and it helped me being more positive and realize that all the time and investment were significant. But I must say that the first thing that comes to your mind is that your world collapsed and that you better quit and start with something new in life.
7. Now that it's all guaranteed, what goals do you have ?

Without having thought about it too much, I would say my main goal will be to make it to the Top 27 at the end of the year while gaining as much experience as possible. The idea for my rookie year is to get a clearer picture of what the Dream Tour really is, and possibly find the key to establish myself in there.

8. What events are you looking forward to in 2009? Any preferences?

I am looking forward to all events in 2009. One of the major things I learnt in 2008 that you cannot expect anything from this or that specific location; last year I did well at all events I thought I would do bad and vice-versa. So I will just take it as it comes and ready well enough. I must say I still have to train and get experience on the hollow reef breaks of the tour.
9. Anything you want to add? People you want to thank?

I want to thank all the sponsors that helped me out so much and will be there again in 2009 Hurley, Oakley, Vans, Nixon, X-Markets and Semente. I also want to thank Pat, Adrian, Jay, Greg, Qball, Sylvain, Gony and his family. My parents of course and my brother Melvin, Lars, Matt, George, James, the Red Eye bar and the SurfExperience! Thanks all!

FMG SURFER Marlon Lipke signs with Gorilla

2009 ASP World Tour rookie Marlon Lipke from Germany signed a contract with SHI (Surf Hardwear International) beginning of the year, which will see him endorse Gorilla and FCS products on his first year on the Dream Tour. Marlon is the first ever German to qualify for the elite top 45 surfers in the world and is very excited about his upcoming year:
“I can’t wait to get going and it is good to know that I have the guys from Gorilla / FCS supporting me. They produce great and durable products, which is extremely important if you are on the road a lot. I’m really stoked to be the one European representing the brand on the ASP World Tour. I will also have the opportunity to design my own signature pad, which is great. So watch out for that one!”

Richie Lovett, SHI Brand Ambassador comments: “We are really excited to have Marlon joining our stable of Gorilla and FCS team riders. Marlon produced some amazing surfing in 2008 and his achievements to date reflect his talent, dedication and desire to succeed. It’s those attributes that make him a perfect fit for our brands. We are looking forward to working closely with Marlon to ensure he has the best equipment needed to perform at the highest level. Now that he has qualified for the World Tour I’m sure he will firmly make his mark on professional surfing and proudly represent the European community.”

Marlon’s signature pad is set to be released in late 2009.

Marlon currently surfs and trains in Ericeira, Portugal for his upcoming first year on the ASP World Tour, which will see him head off to Snapper Rocks, Australia at the end of February. He is also currently filming for a 26 min documentary, which will air on major international TV stations.

Marlon is sponsored by Hurley, Vans, Oakley, Nixon, X-Markets Deutsche Bank, Gorilla Grip, Planet Sports and Semente Surfboards

Die beiden Eisen-Jungs kommen Marlon schonmal nicht in die Quere;

ASP World Tour

2009 ASP Top 45 Set, Irons Brothers’ Withdrawals Finalize Tour Surfers

Pictured: Nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 36, enters the 2009 ASP World Tour as the man to beat, with the opportunity to attain an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title.

COOLANGATTA, Australia (Thursday, January 22, 2009) – The 2009 ASP World Tour is set to commence in just over a month, and the ASP Top 45 is looking set and shaping up to be one of the most explosive the world has ever seen.

Nine-times ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 36, will be back to hunt down ASP World Title No. 10, but standing in his way will be the best of the best.

Bede Durbidge (AUS), 25, and fellow top seeds Taj Burrow (AUS), 30, Joel Parkinson (AUS), 27, and C.J. Hobgood (USA), 29, will lead the rest of the ASP Top 45 in their respective bids to put a stop to the Slater juggernaut.

The official withdrawals of the Irons brothers and the acceptance of replacement surfers are in place, and the 2009 ASP Top 45 are finally locked in.

Roy Powers (HAW), 27, will be replacing Bruce Irons (HAW), 29, who finished No. 20 on last season’s ASP World Tour but will be retiring from full-time competition in 2009. Despite the withdrawal from the Dream Tour, Irons will pursue wildcard entries into select events.

Michael Campbell (AUS), 34, former ASP World No. 2, will replace former three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW), 30, on the 2009 ASP World Tour. Irons the elder will be taking 2009 to recuperate and has been awarded the ASP Wildcard for the 2010 ASP World Tour.

“Andy Irons requested and was granted an ASP Tour wildcard for 2010,” Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, ASP President, said. “Andy cited personal reasons for not participating in the full tour in 2009, however he may participate in certain pet events as an event wildcard. All stakeholders, being the surfers, the Events Council and ASP Management, were supportive of Andy's request, and the ASP Board of Directors ratified this arrangement officially.”

“Andy will be sorely missed in 2009 and we look forward to him contending again from 2010,” Bartholomew said. “Each year, three tour wildcards are issued, they are for injury, they are sometimes granted to next in line WQS and they are also granted to former ASP World Champions or someone held in high esteem.”

This year’s ASP Top 45 will see the addition of eight new faces in rookies Nathaniel Curran (USA), 24, Michel Bourez (PYF), 23, Nic Muscroft (AUS), 26, Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 23, Tim Boal (FRA), 25, Dustin Barca (HAW), 26, Drew Courtney (AUS), 29, and Marlon Lipke (DEU), 24. Over 10 separate surfing nations will be represented in 2009, making this season’s ASP World Tour one of the most diverse on record

Replacements for the 2009 ASP World Tour will be Jay Thompson (AUS), 25, Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 23, Ben Bourgeois (USA), 28, and Yadin Nicol (AUS), 23, respectively.

Comprehensive athlete profiles for the ASP Top 45 are now available via www.aspworldtour.com

The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast will kickstart the 2009 ASP World Tour at Snapper Rocks on Australia’s Gold Coast. The waiting period for the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast runs from February 28 through March 11, 2009.
