Cathels on Crutches, Questionable for Billabong ASP WJC

GOLD COAST, Queensland/ AUS (Wednesday, January 18, 2012) – Davey Cathels (AUS), 20, is currently tied in the race for the 2011 ASP World Junior Title with Brazilian talente Caio Ibelli (BRA), 18. With the final stop on the ASP World Junior Tour relocating to his native country, the young Aussie was setting himself up as a favorite to take out the coveted title, until Cathels suffered a high ankle-sprain while surfing the other day, making his status questionable for the upcoming Billabong ASP World Junior Championships. Australia’s Surfing Life (ASL) caught up with Cathels to get his prognosis for the upcoming event. This… is their story…

Number one seed Davey Cathels has injured his ankle and will be withdrawing from the Billabong World Championships, which start at Burleigh Heads this weekend. A scratching rules Davey out of contention from the World Junior Title, but yesterday when he spoke to ASL he hadn’t given up yet.

“I was having a surf at home and landed funny after doing a little reverse,” says Davey. “I’ve been around to a few physios. They’ve figured out it’s a high ankle sprain and are not sure if it’ll be right the time the contest starts.”
