Catching Up with Brett Simpson Post Tahiti
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California / USA (Saturday, September 3 ,2011) – Brett Simpson (USA), 26, turned heads at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. While sitting on the requalification bubble for the midyear rotation, the Huntington Beach Native put in a memorable performance in heavy Teahupo’o, taking victories over ASP World Title contender Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, former event winner Damien Hobgood (USA), 32, and barrel-riding maestro Fred Patacchia (HAW), 29, to earn a 5th place finish and vault him to No. 23 on the ASP World Rankings. The ASP caught up with Simpo before the start of the Quiksilver Pro New York to get his thoughts on the Billabong Pro Tahiti and the upcoming event in the Big Apple. This is what Simpson had to say…
That contest is one that will go down in history, how special was it to get a result in that event?I had a great time over there! I’m Stoked! It was very special event for me to get a result! First to surf some of the best waves of my life, second I needed a result to stay on tour and third to make a name for myself in some waves of consequence!
You were on the bubble on the World Rankings entering that event, did that give you extra motivation to charge?My position definitely gave me a spark to push myself in those conditions. I’ve always enjoyed surfing barreling waves and those were about as round and thick as they get!
With two wins at home in HB, you’d built a reputation for being strong in beachbreaks, obviously you knew you were a good barrel-rider, but it must have been satisfying to show the rest of the world though.For sure, I’ve done plenty of trips through my career to get better at that specific trait, so I knew what I was capable of and it was just about getting the chance to go show it!
You took down Parko, Damien and Freddy P and looked super comfortable in all of your heats, how much does that help your confidence going into the rest of the year?Well competition is a crazy beast! It comes down to preparation, confidence, execution and surfing! You end up surfing against a good name every time, its about what you gotta do not what they’re gonna do!
The Quiksilver Pro New York’s just about to start? What are your thoughts on the event, have you ever been? It’s looking like some promising hurricane swell is forming!I’m super excited for the big city atmosphere with a fun wedge beach break! I’m going into it with some confidence from the last event, i feel great!
