Australia’s Top Junior Surfers Counting Down to the Chill Pro Junior

TRIGG POINT, Western Australia (Monday, 23th May 2011) - Australia’s best eagerly await the next stop on the prestigious ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, the Chill Pro Junior Presented by the City of Stirling at Trigg Point, Perth from May 27-29.

The Chill Pro Junior is the event where the best from the West get to show the rest what they’re made of. Surfing WA, along with local dairy producer Brownes Chill as well as the City of Stirling have combined to offer a world class event for WA surfers to compete on their home soil. To ensure that the highest caliber of surfers will attend this event, the Chill Pro Junior will be a 5-star male rated event, (AU $25,000 prize money) and a 3-Star female rated event, (AU $6000 prize money).

A win at the Chill Pro Junior is held is particularly high regard, especially when you look at the list of winners from the past few years – Stuart Kennedy (NSW, AUS), Owen Wright (NSW, AUS), Tyler Wright (NSW, AUS) and Jack Freestone (QLD, AUS). The two Wrights are now competing in the ASP World Title Race and Freestone won last year’s ASP World Junior Title.

“We have some really quality surfers set to make their way to the Chill Pro Junior this year,” said Justin Majeks, Surfing WA Events Manager. “This event will give our best young surfers a chance to pit their talents against some of the best juniors in the world. The Chill Pro Junior has been pivotal in shaping the futures of many surfing champions. All the past winners have all gone onto bigger and better things after winning here at Trigg Point.”

Tom Woods (QLD, AUS) current ASP Australasian Junior Series ratings leader is one surfer hoping to add his name to the list of winners.

“I’m getting over 2nd place, so I’d love to win the Chill Pro Junior,” Woods said. Woods has finished runner-up at two events this year and thinks Trigg Point can produce the goods to see him go one better. “I’m really hoping the point will work, it’s a good wave for airs and really suits my surfing. The beachie has a lot of backwash and is a short wave, so it makes competing tough.”

Felicity Palmateer (WA, AUS), local lass and Chill Pro Junior event Champion for the past two years is looking to make it three in a row.

“I won my first ever Pro Junior at my home break so this event is really special to me,” Palmateer said. “I would love to win it again, but we will just have to wait and see what happens.”

Palmateer, fresh from competing at the elite ASP World Tour event in Brazil will use her competitive nuance and local knowledge to gain an edge over her fellow competitors.

“It’s so great to have a Pro Junior event at my home break in Perth,” Palmateer said. “I’ve surfed this wave my whole life and I feel like I know it like the back of my hand. It’s always good to have that extra bit of confidence going into an event.”

Competition is set to be fierce in the fight for prize-money and points to qualify for this year’s ASP World Junior Tour.
