Magno Pacheco Flares on Day Two of the SuperSurf Internacional at Xangri-La, in Brazil

ATLANTIDA, Xangri-La, Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil (Thursday, May, 5, 2011) – The second day of competition of the ASP 5-Star 2011 SuperSurf Internacional started today with a beautiful sunny day and smaller but cleaner two-to-three foot waves on offer at Atlantida Pier, in Xangri-La, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

This time it was Brazilian surfer Magno Pacheco who pushed the performance boundaries, setting the new highlight of the competition so far with a 9.40 pts earned from the judges after shredding a long right hand wall off the Pier. Magno Pacheco also set the highest two wave total score, a 16.40 pts out of 20 pts.

“I was kind a lost at the beginning of the heat, paddling back and forth. Then I realize I had to calm down due to the fact that I still had to have a good back up score,” said Magno Pacheco. “I started with a smaller one, but right away I caught a better one and scored 7.0 pts, that cheered me up. Towards the end of the heat a bigger set came through right for me, I took off in a long and steep right hander and I threw a series of strong turns; I was stoked.”

In the morning, Brazilian Luel Felipe equaled the 8.83 pts score made by Tomas Hermes yesterday. Luel rode a nice barrel on the Atlantida Pier rights.

“I was losing the heat and at the last minute a perfect barreling wave came to me, I pulled in and made it, great! So cool”, said Luel Felipe. “The swell has dropped down, but the waves are so much better. Yesterday (Wednesday) the conditions were way more difficult with the strong current playing a big role; not today, there’s open faces and even nice barrels since early morning.”

The opening match of day 2 of the ASP 5-Star 2011 SuperSurf Internacional was a hard fought one, only decided in the dying seconds of the heat. The ASP South America record holder with eight wins under his belt, the three-time Brazilian Champion Peterson Rosa notched an excellent score of 8.00 pts for his last wave to debut with a win at Xangri-La.

“Wonderful day, blue skies and better yet I managed to find good waves and score an 8.0 pts and a 6.93 pts to win the heat”, said Peterson Rosa a long time ASP World Tour campaigner.

Thursday was also the day the ASP 5-Star 2011 SuperSurf International saw the first international surfers to move through. The first to guarantee his place on the next round was Leandro Usuna (ARG) who defeated the Brazilians Alon Campestrini and Krystian Kymerson to get the second place in the heat won by Simao Romao.

“I’m very happy. Last year I didn’t do any good here in Brazil, but the waves that are breaking here are pretty similar to the Argentinean waves, and this turned things easier,” said Leandro Usuna. “I was too nervous at first, I fell on some waves, but I managed to adjust my surfing with the conditions in order to qualify for the next round.”

After Usuna break the taboo, Vincent Duvignac (FRA), Chris Waring (USA) and Manuel Selman (CHL) also advanced to the round of 48 surfers at the ASP 5-Star 2011 SuperSurf Internacional Xangri-La.  The round of 48 was even announced to start in the afternoon of this Thursday, but with the swell fading and the long lags between sets, it was officially to start Friday at 7am.

The ASP 5-Star SuperSurf Internacional event is produced by Editora Abril with the sponsorship of Peugeot Automobile. The event also has the support of the brand Nicoboco, City of Xangri-La, Federacao Gaucha de Surf and the Associacao de Surf da Praia de Atlantida. Check the event live at www.aspsouthamerica.com.br The finals on Sunday will also be broadcast live on ESPN Brazil.
