Kelly Slater is from Florida by ESPN
Florida boy and 10 time ASP World Champ, Kelly Slater.
LOS ANGELES, California/USA (Thursday, March 31, 2011) – Kelly Slater (USA), 39, has ruled the sport of surfing for nearly two decades while collecting his 10 ASP World Titles and 46 elite event wins, not to mention the additional accolades along the way. No one can question Slater’s accomplishments, but one thing that often leaves the global surfing community in disbelief is that the reigning ASP World Champ is from Florida, which is notoriously known for having less than desirable surf. ESPN recently caught up with several of his Floridian peers to get a Sunshine State perspective on the man that is king in his home state. This… is their story…
So, Kelly Slater recently nailed down his 46th ASP World Tour victory. He’s nearing 50 wins among the world’s best, and that’s not including his Quiksilver Eddie title in 2002, a few X Games golds, and every other accolade to basically double his closest competitor’s resume. It’s almost hard to think of Slater as a Floridian anymore. You can barely think of him as from the US. He is seemingly a man of the world — sometimes not even our world.
But the folks in Florida don’t ever forget where he’s from. He’s a sports icon in a state where sports are religion.
