A Day on the Rock with Michel Bourez
HALEIWA, Oahu/Hawaii (Thursday, November 18, 2010) – Michel Bourez (PYF), 24, former Reef Hawaiian Pro Champion (2008), started his Vans Triple Crown campaign off on the right foot by winning his opening heat and with an impressive season under his belt on this year’s ASP World Tour, the Tahitian powerhouse will be one to watch at Haleiwa this year.
Bourez, who won the Reef Hawaiian Pro en route to qualifying for the ASP Dream Tour, spends his year dreaming of Haleiwa’s punchy right-handers and is starving to tear into a few Hawaiian bombs at this year’s event.
“I’m used to surfing powerful waves and the whole year I’m looking forward to those events,” Bourez said. “I love big powerful rights and Haleiwa is pretty much the contest that I want to do well in.”
Bourez, who is fresh off of his career-best result of an Equal 3rd place finish at the Rip Curl Search Puerto Rico, is maintaining his original goal of a spot within the Top 10 by year’s with his current status as ASP World Title Race No. 9 and is now carrying his momentum into Haleiwa, where he has proven to be lethal in previous years.
“My main goal this year was to make the Top 10 and right now I’m in,” Bourez said. “I tried to do my best and I made my best result of the year in Puerto Rico two weeks ago and now I’m just stoked to be at this event.”
When he’s not prepping for his Reef Hawaiian Pro heats, The Spartain has been gearing up for a strong finish to his ASP Dream Tour campaign by getting in as much time at Pipeline as possible.
“I’ve been surfing Pipe the whole time I’ve been here,” Bourez said. “It’s tough out there though. It’s hard to get good waves because there are too many people. You can catch something really good though and one wave can make your day.”
