Antonio Eudes Leads Opening Day at ASP 6-Star Supersurf Internacional in Brazil

FLORIANOPOLIS, Santa Catarina, Brazil (Tuesday, September 28, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional event run through 20 heats of the round of 96 surfers at Praia do Santinho. The conditions were all right and the event officials gave the green light for the start of the contest. Good 3-5 ft (1.5 m) waves were on offer for today as the dark clouds brought some occasional showers early in the morning.

Antonio Eudes (BRA), 27, set the rhythm at the 12th heat of the day with a blazing performance that amazed everyone’s minds. Scoring an 8.67 ou of a possible 10 and having a backup score of 6.27 Eudes finished his 25 minute clash with a total combined score of 14.94 thus securing the highest single and combined scores of the day.

“I have been training very hard under my coach’s management and that helped me to achieve this result today in the competition. Thanks to God by sending the good waves for me in the heat”, said Antonio Eudes who’s living in Florianopolis for two years by now.

“The conditions are pretty tough out there, but it’s only a matter of time and patience to get the nice lefts and rights on the right site of the contest area. That’s the place I found those lefts I scored high and that I just knew were the highlights of today’s competition. I’m very happy for that”, said Eudes.

The Round of 96 surfers will finish tomorrow and the top seeded surfers make their debut on the second day of the competition. The well seasoned Victor Ribas a former WT surfer did well in his first appearance at the event. With a 7.10 in his best ride he finished second and advanced to the next round where he’s going to face the top seeded surfers of the SuperSurf Internacional.

The first international surfers to compete in the SuperSurf Internacional were the Portuguese surfer Joao Guedes beated by Brazilian surfers Stefano Dornelles in 1st and Marcelo Nunes in the 2nd place. The other was South Africa’s Antonio Bortoletto, who’s got 2nd in the heat number 7.

“It’s always tough to compete in Brazil; the level of surfing is always high and the waves very challenging, compared to the South African waves”, said Antonio Bortoletto. “The waves were choppy and fast, making it difficult to find the best positioning. I was aware of that so I tried to stay paddling all the time just to find the best waves, and it paid off”.

Another international surfer made it through this Tuesday was the Basquean Jathyr Berasaluce who’s got second in the heat won by Marco Fernandez.

“The conditions are really difficult, with the waves closing out a lot; besides there’s a deep channel right in the middle section which makes the connections almost impossible. Not easy at all but I managed to find some open walls to surf and advance in second place”, said Jatyr Berasaluce.
