Banzai Pipeline Too Wild for Volcom Pipe Pro Today

HONOLULU, Oahu/Hawaii – (January 30, 2012) - Hawaii is one of the few places on the planet that a professional surfing contest can be postponed due to TOO much surf, as was the case this-morning for the Volcom Pipe Pro. The rising swell started maxing out at the Banzai Pipeline at 8:30am today, forcing organizers to call another lay day for the $130,000, 5-star rated event. The Volcom Pipe Pro has until February 4 to wrap up and there are two days of competition remaining. A champion will likely be crowned by Thursday.

Offshore open ocean buoy readings are still on the rise, indicating that the peak of this swell is yet to hit Oahu’s North Shore. Surfline.com expects waves to grow all day and persist into tomorrow.

The event’s top seeds will take to the water on the next day of competition, including: defending champion John John Florence (Haw); Tanner Gudauskas (CA); Josh Kerr (Aus); and Joan Duru (Fra).

Organizers will assess the conditions at first light tomorrow morning to determine if there will be an 8am start. Waves may still be too big.
