Filipe Toledo Stands Out on Day 3 of the ASP 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional

ITAMAMBUCA BEACH, Sao Paulo State / Brazil (Thursday, October 13, 2011) - Under cloudy skies and waves in the 2-4 foot (.5-1.0 meter) range, Filipe Toledo (BRA), 16, set new records at the ASP World 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional 2011 at Itamambuca Beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil. On a wave that started and finished off with aerials, the local surfer scored a 9.5 (out of 10) for the highest single-wave total of the event in addition to his heat-wave total of 17.83 (out of 20) to set both records for the event so far.

“That little right-hander in my own backyard is going off,” said Filipe Toledo. “I’m really confident and feeling light and loose on my board. My father (ex-pro surfer Ricardo Toledo) gave me some tips and guidance from all of his experience and hopefully I can take this title home.”

Mitch Crews (AUS) took out the top seed in the event, Willian Cardoso (BRA), to advance alongside Magno Pacheco (BRA) into Round of 24 of competition.

Kolohe Andino (USA) and Tanner Gudauskas (USA), who are ranked No. 42 and No. 43 respectively, are in the running for a spot on the Top 32 of the ASP World Ranking. They both qualified in second place into the next round behind Tomas Hermes (BRA) and Hizunome Bettero (BRA) in their respective heats.

“It was a heat against the newest generation in American surfing,” said Tomas Hermes. “They’re pulling out all the stops and being extremely innovative which was what I tried to do as well. I’ve been practicing my airs a lot and I was able to start off with a 9.33 (out of 10) on my first wave. It wasn’t just an air where you pump and punt. I bottom turned as if I were going to do a snap off the top, but I took off instead. I’m stoked and I think tricks like these are going to score higher.”

The other international surfers to continue into Round of 24 were Rafael Pereira (VEN) who took out three Brazilians in his heat and Adrien Toyon (REU) who qualified in second place behind Leonardo Neves (BRA).

“It was a tough heat for me against the Brazilians,” said Adrien Toyon. “Leo (Neves) surfed great and won, but I found some nice ones that helped me qualify. Now I’m into the Round of 24 and I hope the waves get a little bigger so I can showcase my surfing and do well in my next heat and continue to advance in competition.”

Local surfer Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) has been very popular at the SuperSurf Internacional by being host to several international athletes.

“There are more than 15 people staying at my house,” said Dantas. “Gavin Gillette, Kolohe Andino, Evan Geiselman, Luke Davis plus a bunch of other people are all there. It’s fun because it keeps everybody frothing.”

The SuperSurf Internacional is presented by Peugeot and is produced by Abril Media and with the support of the State of Sao Paulo through the Secretary of Tourism, Nicoboco surfwear, Jovem Pan Radio and Alma do Mar art gallery.  The SuperSurf Internacional is an ASP World 6-Star event and is part of the ASP South America circuit which is broadcast live at www.supersurf.com.br with the final day being broadcast by ESPN Brasil.
