Brazilians Light Up First Day of Action at ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz
ZARAUTZ, Basque Country / Spain (Saturday, September 3, 2011) – The ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel kicked off today in building swell finishing the day with 2-3Ft waves at the main beach of Zarautz. A very busy day of surfing saw surfers compete on split banks with a total of 48 heats run today.
Halley Batista (BRA) 25, was the most innovative and impressive surfer today, dominating his Round 2 bout by posting the highest two-wave combined heat total of 18.37 out of a possible 20.
«The waves today weren’t that good but I guess I had a good timing and I could throw a big air on my first wave. It came in as a 9.17 and I was so stoked ! The second wave came later in the heat and I had to battle for it. I surfed it well and did another good air and it was scored a 9.20. That was just the perfect heat for me. I have a lot of friends down here and it’s great to feel the support on the beach.»
Batista, who has been battling on the Star Series events for three years, has surfed mainly in Brazil in 2011, and comes to Europe with hopes to get a good result and climb up the ASP World Rankings ladder.
«My best result so far was a 5th place finish in a 6-Star in Brazil. That’s pretty much all I have for now so my goal is to get more points coming here. I want to improve my situation for next year’s seeding and be able to get into all Prime events.»
After a short stay on the Old Continent, Batista will go back to his homeland to defend an ungoing lead on the federal national rankings. With the forehand attack he displayed today, odds are he might just do that !
«Unfortunately I can’t stay any longer in Europe because I’m surfing in the National Championships in Brazil and I’m standing first in the rankings there so I want to go and try to win that title ! I’m not sure about ending the season in Hawaii, I might just focus on the remaining events in Brazil.»
Kolohe Andino (USA) 17, was another stand-out surfer today collecting the highest single wave score of the event. Andino, who registered late for the event came to the Basque country not knowing if he could surf and was happy to finally put on a singlet today.
«It has been a really long wait to get started. I was in Virginia at the end of the event and I got in as third alternate so I was stoked and I ended up getting in the first round. I’ve been itching the whole time thinking would I get in or not. As soon as it started breaking today I was out there. I haven’t surfed for six days so I got a couple of foam climbs to warm up. They are ridable and the contest has finally started.»
After five long days of waiting for the ocean to come to life again, Andino surfed with speed and precision. Despite having enjoyed the local gastronomy a little bit too much, he managed to hook into a punchy right hander to fit in a quick snap followed by an air-reverse. His efforts paid off as he was rewarded with the highest single wave score of the day, an impressive 9.33 out of a possible 10 points.
«I was concentrated the whole time waiting to start but I eat a lot of food because I usually surf so much and if I don’t I put on weight really quickly. I eat so much because I surf so much and sometimes it is hard to stay light in these small waves after a long break.»
Hodei Collazo (EUK) 27, local hero and member of the Zarautz surf club, qualified for the third round of competition today along with fellow European Jonathan Gonzalez from the Canary Islands.
«I got lucky the swell was picking up and we didn’t have that slow beginning the previous heats had. We had so many waves, I’m lucky I got those three good lefts but I feel great and my board feels very good too» said Collazo.
It took the local ambassador about 20mn to get back to the beach marshall area and pass on his singlet to the next competitor. The beach crowd was all over Collazo at the end of his heat, asking for photos, interviews and autographs on his way back.
«I have everyone here supporting me, my girlfriend, family and all my friends are behind me. Since I was born I surfed here everyday so it’s definitely very special. Last year and the year before I didn’t surf really good and had bad results so hopefully this year I can surf good heats and have a good result for everybody out here.»
Collazo, a Top 10 European surfer is climbing his way up the World Rankings and shows a clear intention of making his way further up towards the coveted ASP Top 32. With a lot of events remaining in the 2011 season, everything is possible for the talented natural footer.
«I’m trying to keep building my ranking and accumulating points, the objective being fighting for the Top 32 at the end of the year. There are many important contests to come, like the Prime in Portugal and then California and Hawaii.. I just want to keep doing my best surfing and if I can fight for that Top 32 it would be great.»
Flavio Nakagima (BRA) 23, joined the Brazilian crew who displayed some impressive aerial skills in the rising swell. As the tide filled in this afternoon, he was able to find some long lefthanders and throw air-reverses and alley-oops to please the crowd.
«It’s my first time here in Spain. This morning the waves were really small but it’s picked up now and it’s a lot of fun ! I found some really good lefts in my heat and was able to do two big airs. I got a 8.90 and a 6.17 so I’m very happy to make it through.»
Nakagima , who had his best career result in the Relentless Boardmasters in Newquay just a few weeks ago finishing 5th, wishes to keep the ball rolling and will try everything to make his European campaign even more successful.
«I’m ranked 140 right now so this is a very important event for me and I need a good result here. I’m also going to the Prime event in Azores and Hawaii for the end of the season.»
Competition will resume tomorrow in Zarautz with an early 8.00AM call for an immediate start on two split banks. With the first two rounds completed today and 29 heats left to run, the 2011 San Miguel Pro Zarautz Winner will be crowned tomorrow Sunday, September 4th.
