New Swell Expected on Day 5 of ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz
ZARAUTZ, Basque Country – Spain (Friday, September 2, 2011) – Unfortunately on the fourth day of the ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel waiting period, the swell hasn’t reached Zarautz and no heats were surfed. Uncontestable 0,20m waves kept rolling in today with no evolution towards a possible start.
Contest Director Aitor Aguirremota was on deck early this morning and kept an eye on the shores today in hopes of bigger waves and longer lines on the horizon but at the end of the day the conditions didn’t improve as expected.
“Because we couldn’t run any heats so far, the plan is to run split banks tomorrow as soon as we have waves and do a complete day of surfing, 9 hours minimum if possible. If we can do that it would mean we can finish the first two rounds with 20 minute heats and maybe even start the third round. If all this is possible then we can finish the contest on Sunday for sure.”
With a short two-days time remaining in the official waiting period at the ASP San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel, questions are raised as to the possibility of finishing the event after the weekend.
“Unfortunately if we can’t run as soon as tomorrow morning we might have to finish the event on Monday and ask some surfers and the staff to stay with us one more day. Tomorrow is definitely the key.”
Event officials have been monitoring the conditions for five days now and the new swell expected for the weekend is about to reach the Basque coastline in the next few hours. A decision has been made to have an earlier call tomorrow morning at 8.30AM to try to start before the full tide if conditions allow it.
«I use three different websites to analyze the previsions. It’s very hard to say what is going to happen with certainty because they all have a different forecast. Some said the swell would hit us today, others tomorrow morning and the pessimistic ones even announce it for saturday evening.»
