Billabong Surf Eco Festival Pro Junior Finals on Wednesday
SALVADOR / Bahia, Brazil (Tuesday, August 30, 2011) – The Surf Eco Festival presented by Billabong will have its first titles decided on Wednesday at Jaguaribe Beach in Salvador, Brazil. Ian Gouveia (BRA) advanced directly into the Quarter-Finals today (Tuesday) in good conditions in waves in the 2-3 ft. (0.5-1.0 meter) range.
Gouveia leads the ranking in the race for the ASP South America Pro Junior title. He has already guaranteed his spot in the ASP World Men’s Pro Junior Tour but his final outcome will only be decided on the last day of competition on Wednesday in Salvador.
“I’ve made it to the Quarter-Finals and I think I’m pretty close to locking in a spot for the World Pro Junior Series,” said a confident Gouveia. “Now I’m going for the title. I’ve never had one before in my career and I’m really fighting for this one. I’m going to do my best.”
Also making it into the Quarter-Finals was Filipe Toledo (BRA) who qualified in a close battle against Peterson Crisanto (BRA). Toledo, who currently sits at No. 4 in the South America Pro Junior ranking used aerial maneuvers and above the lip turns to defeat his opponent.
“I finally found some good waves to throw some airs,” said an excited Toledo. “I wasn’t able to surf very well yesterday (Monday), but today I did and now I feel more confident to face my next heats. I hope everything works out for me tomorrow.”
Deivid Silva (BRA) who was ranked No. 3 in the competition was eliminated from the event after posting the highest single-wave score, 9.0 (out of a possible 10 points) and the highest heat-wave total of 17.55 (out of a possible 20 points). Silva was defeated by Peterson Crisanto.
“It was a really tough heat,” said Crisanto. “It’s a really important event because it will decide who goes to World Pro Junior Tour, so I’m happy to make it into the Quarter-Finals. Even though I haven’t done too well in the past events, I still have a shot if I win this one, so I’m going for it.”
The South America Women’s Pro Junior champion will also be announced this Wednesday. The top two surfers will classify for a spot on the ASP World Pro Junior Tour. Gabriela Leite (BRA) leads the ranking followed by Juliana Meneguel (BRA) in second, followed closely by Monik Santos (BRA) who may rise in the standings before competition is complete.
