Irene Forces Mammoth Day for Vans Pro, Andino Secures ASP North America Pro Junior Title

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia / USA (Thursday, August 25, 2011) – The 2011 ASP 4-Star Coastal Edge Vans Pro and Vans Pro Junior brought to you by Rockstar and Skullcandy completed another massive day of competition, wrapping up 36 heats in increasing three foot surf at 1st Street Jetty to narrow the men’s field down to 32 while deciding the Vans Pro Junior’s Quarterfinalists. To punctuate the exciting day of surfing, California prodigy Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA), 17, secured the 2011 ASP North America Pro Junior Series Title.

While the Coastal Edge presents Vans Pro and Vans Pro Junior were expected to have a seven-day waiting period ending Sunday, August 28, the impending Hurricane Irene, which is expected to wreak havoc on Virginia Beach as early as Saturday morning, has forced event organizers to crown winners by tomorrow afternoon.

Andino, who has finaled in every ASP North America Pro Junior event this year, maintained his form throughout the season and achieved his year-long goal of taking out the honorable regional title.

“That was my main goal to win the title this year,” Andino said. “I wanted to win because Evan (Geiselman) won it last year, and he beat me fair and square, I was in all of the events and he won. I’m glad to have it checked off my list. I’ve ended up in all of the finals so far this year, I started off with those first two good results and the rest of the year went well for me.”

Andino, who won his Round of 32 Vans Pro Junior heat in addition to his men’s Round of 64 match, has been on an absolute tear, skyrocketing up the ASP World Ranking via consecutive equal 3rd place finishes in the last ASP PRIME and ASP 6-Star event, but the innovative regular-footer remains humble regarding his success.

“Sometimes you can get too overconfident,” Andino said. “In my first heat this morning I felt like I was surfing kind of lackadaisical and not really giving it my all. In the middle of the heat I thought ‘this is lame, I’m going to go out there and amp out as hard as I can.’ I’ve just got to stay humble and stay hungry.”

Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 20, had a successful day to open his Coastal Edge Vans Pro and Vans Pro Junior campaign, scalping victories in both divisions while earning the highest single-wave score of the day for ASP Pro Junior action, 8.83 out of 10 with two powerful forehand turns.

“I took a break after the US Open, I didn’t go to Europe and I thought I’d take a break because I’ve been doing contests all year and I’ve been having a bad year,” Young said. “I took a little time and free-surfed and went on a trip and now I’m here and I’m hungry to do well here.”

Young, who has been dissatisfied with his performance over the last few events, is hoping to find his form again in Virginia Beach to spark some a positive roll for the remainder of his season.

“This event for me is to get back on track, get a good result and to get my confidence going again for the back half of this year,” Young said. “It’d be awesome to do well here and I’m going to try my hardest to do well in both divisions.”

Michael Dunphy (Virginia Beach, VA), 21, who is an event wildcard, capitalized on his local knowledge of 1st Street Jetty to take a commanding victory in his Round of 64 heat while belting the day’s highest heat-total of 14.50 (out of 20).

“I was a little bit nervous and I’m glad to get that first heat out of the way,” Dunphy said. “I just wanted to get some waves that would give me the opportunity to get scores and I knew it was dead-low tide and was going to be kind of slow. I got that one right off the bat and got another one. I only got a few waves, so luckily I got a few good ones and made it through.”

The Virginia Beach native shook off the nerves that came along with competing in front of his home crowd and is out to post a top result at the Coastal Edge presents Vans Pro.

“I think it’s good to get that first heat out of the way just to get going in the contest,” Dunphy said. “Hopefully I can make it through three-or-four more and make the Final.”

Michael February (Cape Town, ZAF), 18, who has won numerous heats thus far, continued to flare when he belted the day’s highest single-wave score of a 9.00 with a lightning quick attack despite the mushy waves on offer at 1st Street Jetty.

“The waves are pretty fun and it’s picked up a bit more,” February said. “I guess I got lucky and got a few waves and I just managed to finish off a few turns.”

February, who traveled to Virginia Beach in search of the ASP 4-Star points on offer to build his ASP World Ranking, has begun to assert himself as a bit of an international force among his fellow competitors.

“It’s been great to surf a lot of heats,” February said. “I’ve made a couple now and I’ve got a good rhythm going so hopefully I can keep it up I guess. I pretty much came here for the points. I’m trying to go around and surf these 4-Stars and build my seed up.”

The Coastal Edge presents Vans Pro and Vans Pro Junior brought to you by Rockstar and Skullcandy will recommence at 7am tomorrow morning and crown champions by day’s end. To watch the HD webcast LIVE log on to www.vans.com/vanspro.
