Second Lay Day Called at ASP 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro. Swell Expected Tomorrow

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau Ocean – France (Saturday, August 20, 2011) – A second consecutive lay day has been called at the ASP 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro due to incontestable conditions at the main event site at Grande Plage. Tiny 0.20m ripples are lapping the shoreline with swell forecasts remaining promising for a new ground swell to begin pulsing tomorrow Sunday for the crowning of this year’s Sooruz Lacanau Pro.

Contest director and organizer, Cyril Camu assessed once again the conditions on site this morning and the swell forecast on internet to confirm the expected rise in swell size and period for the final day of the official waiting period.

“The ocean is more of a lake today and it’s going to be a very hot day at the beach but there are just no waves at all. Forecast for tomorrow looks great. The swell should be picking-up in the morning and we expect to have 3-4Ft in the afternoon. We’re hoping to finish the event in excellent conditions tomorrow around 5PM.”

ASP Europe’s regional head judge Iain ‘Ratso’ Buchanan called the decision on Thursday to take a two-days break from competition to wait for an improvement in the conditions.

“I’ve been speaking with the event organiser Cyril Camu and the sponsors and they’re pretty happy too so all in all it was the right decision. The swell is rising with a 10s period as opposed to an 8s period when we finished the Quarter-Finals. Even if the swell isn’t as big as they say I think the pulse with the incoming tide is looking pretty promising. The bank the event’s been held on is a very good left and right peak and with the man-on-man format I think it’s highly contestable and very fair for the remaining guys.”

Buchanan, recently crowned ASP Grand Masters World champion, commented on the 4 remaining surfers left in the ASP 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro and the expectations of having an amazing finals day tomorrow.

“We have two of the best juniors in the world at the moment, Kolohe Andino (USA) 17, and Gabriel Medina (BRA) 17, so you can’t ask for a better finish and we have two exciting Australians, Ryan Callinan 19, who is also still in the juniors and Mitch Crews 21, who was really strong in Newquay and continuing here, so I am sure it’s going to be a great finish.”

A first call will be made tomorrow, Sunday 21st August at 10am where event officials will begin assessing conditions for the grande finale to the Sooruz Lacanau Pro 2011.
