Quarterfinalists Decided at Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian
SAN SEBASTIAN, Basque Country / Spain (Friday, July 22, 2011) ? The ASP Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian ran through another marathon day of competition to decide quarter-finalists in both men?s and women?s divisions with the level of surfing stepping up into top gear. Europe?s finest male and female athletes tore apart the long lefts and rights in improving 3-4ft waves at the main event site of La Zurriola.
Medi Veminardi (St Leu, REU) 19, jumped out of the starting blocks with a combination of powerful forehand snaps and foam climbs to link various sections together to post a 9.50 out of 10. Veminardi quickly backed up with another left which he destroyed to post an 8.83 and a combined heat total of 18.33, the highest of the event.
?I was kind of tired because I was first heat this morning and I had to wait all day at the beach. So I just drank a lot of water and I saw the waves were difficult and I had to choose two good waves and I was lucky to get the two good ones. You had to be in the right spot at the right time. The waves came to me and I am used to lefts from where I am from so I am happy.
Veminardi has continued to work hard on his technique and competitive tactics in this his final year as a junior and the results are starting to pay off. With a clear end of year objective to make the ASP World Junior Series ever present in his approach to each heat he surfs.
?I have just come back from Panama and I got some good comments on my surfing there so it boosted my confidence. I went back home and trained. I am feeling good for the summer. I want to get the title and go heat by heat and I hope it all goes well.
Justine Dupont (Lacanau, FRA) 19, set the women?s division off to an explosive start with a near perfect display as she attacked the long lefts with a series of backhand hacks and carves to amass a combined two-wave heat total of 17.40 out of 20.
?I was a bit stressed just before my heat because I saw my fin was cracked so I started off with care not to push the tail too much but after it was ok so I went for the turns. There are some good lefts and I saw some good rights too but I chose to go left on my backhand. I feel confident so we will see what happens in the next heat.?
Dupont currently sits in third position on the ASP Europe Women?s Pro Junior series and is facing all her nearest opponents in the upcoming rounds. After competing in the recent ASP World Longboard event in Biarritz, Dupont is now focusing on her favourite short board speciality as the series builds to its finale.
?In all the Pro Juniors the top girls are in them so you have to surf your best all the time. It is an important contest and one I want to do my best at if I want to maybe win the title.?
Marie Dejean (FRA) 19, also concentrated on the peeling lefts to easily advance through to the quarter-finals. Her backhand turns looked sharp and crisp as she linked her snaps through the flatter sections of the waves. Dejean racked up a two-wave heat total of 15.60 which included an excellent 8.00. She sits in 19th position on the ASP European Women?s Pro Junior series after a positive 9th finish in her debut 2011 Pro Junior appearance last month.
?At the beginning I got a very good left with some good manoeuvres and I am happy because it has been a long time since I have surfed like that in a heat. That wave then gave me the confidence to keep going in the rest of the heat.?
Dejean, in her third year of medical school, has shown on many occasions her capability to beat any number of top seeded girls on tour and if conditions prevail could make a run for the Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian title.
?I had to wait for the next good wave but they came and I got the excellent score. If the waves stay like this and I can keep surfing like that I will be pleased to do it in the next rounds.?
The Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian is crucial for all surfers wishing to build on their rankings towards qualifying for the ASP World Junior Series which kicks off with the Oakley World Pro Junior on October 3, in Bali Indonesia. Surfers are also out to win the added prize purse of 2000 Euros up for grabs offered by Surfing Euskadi for the overall best performer in both divisions at the Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian and the upcoming Sopelana Pro Junior.
A first call at 07h30 will be made for both men and women with quarter-finals running through to the crowning of this year?s Oakley Pro Junior San Sebastian champions.
