Taylor Jensen and Dane Pioli Lead Charge at the 14th Whalebone Classic

COTTESLOE, Perth/WA (Saturday 16 July, 2011) – Today saw a gathering of some of the world’s best longboa rders for the final leg of the ASP Longboard Qualifying Series – The 14th Annual Whalebone Classic at Iso’s Reef, Cottesloe Beach. Competitors entertained the crowd as they mixed traditional and modern manoeuvres on their logs.

Six times US Open Champion Taylor Jensen (USA) proved too strong in the opening heat of the Mack Hall Real Estate Open Pro, twice hanging ten in the opening section of the wave before two full rail cutbacks. Jensen then worked the wave all the way too the beach with the highest scoring ride of the day. Nimble footed Lindsay Small walked the board and raked up some good tip time to finish second with former Whalebone Pro Champion Ben Proudfoot unable to find the right waves finishing third.

Dan Corbett (WA) who released himself from hospital where he was being treated for a broken toe that had become infected, raced to an early lead by sitting on the inside. Corbett had 4 waves before anyone else had notched a score. Justin Redman (WA) surfed strongly on the lefts to make it a 1 – 2 finish ahead of NSW pair, Jared Neal and Kevin Holt.

Current Australian Champion Dane Pioli (WA) led from start to finish in heat 3 after scoring a great opening ride and backing it up with another crowd pleasing ride as he was paddling back out. Everywhere that Pioli sat waves seemed to appear for him. WA Champion Rahn Goddard worked several left handers all the way to the beach to keep Matty Cook (NSW) at bay with the ever happy Michael Cottier (NSW) 4th.

Event Champions will be crowned when competition resumes tomorrow across a multitude of divisions. More info – www.whaleboneclassic.com.au
