International Field Tackles Changing Conditions at Copa Quiksilver El Salvador
Matthew Bromley (ZAF), 19, took his Round of 64 heat win today despite the tricky morning conditions at the Copa Quiksilver El Salvador.
PUNTA ROCA, La Libertad / El Salvador (Friday, July 8, 2011) ? Day three of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Copa Quiksilver El Salvador saw changing conditions throughout the day while completing the Round of 64 in its entirety. After officials placed the event on hold after four heats due to poor conditions, the afternoon?s incoming tide and calm winds provided the perfect canvas for another day of high-performance surfing at El Salvador?s righthand gem of Punta Roca in La Libertad.
The ASP 4-Star Copa Quiksilver El Salvador has drawn an impressive list of up-and-coming talent from around the globe to help build their seed on the ASP World Ranking and also offers the opportunity for Latino upstarts to build a name for themselves on an international platform.
Matthew Bromley (Cape Town, ZAF), 19, was one international talent to find his way to victory despite the wind-blown early morning conditions. The South African used the tricky onshore surf to his advantage to advance into the Round of 48.
?The waves are still good out there, still running down the point, but you just have to use the sections to get speed,? Bromley said. ?We get a lot of onshore winds are home, and I love surfing in it. It gets more bowly and really smashable, so you have just got change it up and look for an air with the wind under your board. As soon as you get your board out of the water it?s stuck to your feet. I had a wave that I kind of bogged on the first turn, so I had to make it count and went for the air and ended up getting a 6 and winning the heat.?
Bromley is one of many international up-and-comers who are using the Copa Quiksilver El Salvador?s ASP 4-Star status as a building block for their ASP World Ranking while simultaneously enjoying the world-class wave of Punta Roca.
?I?m having such a good time, meeting new people all the time and learning a bit of Spanish, and surfing epic waves,? Bromley said. ?This year I?m just building my seed a little, hoping to get into some events in Hawaii and Australia, but just getting familiar with the tour and trying to find some big barrels along the way. I?ve had a couple free surfs out here, and now two heats, but it?s similar to back home. I?m from Cape Town, and if there is a big swell coming, we just drive up to J-Bay. It does feel a bit like J-Bay, the way it runs, but there are maybe a few more barrels at J-Bay, as it runs down into the bay. I did get a sneaky little barrel off the top today, and a couple yesterday, so I?m getting lucky to find them.?
Jeremy Johnston (FLA) carefully monitored conditions throughout the holding period to win his heat immediately following the break.
?I was ready at any moment, and just stayed focused during the break and that?s was the plan, knowing we were going to surf eventually,? Johnston said. ?Nothing really gets in my head, I feel good on my equipment and I was ready to go. I could compare it to a little more East Coast style, but I?m not picky at all. I?m stoked on clean waves, I?m very familiar with choppy conditions and I just love it.
Johnston, a longtime competitive standout, is out to capitalize on the addition of several new events on the ASP North American calendar this year to help build his seed for the future.
?El Salvador and Mazatlan were my first ASP events in years, but with all the 4-Stars on the schedule in fun waves, I?m just stoked to get back out there and work on a little seed for them,? Johnston said. ?It?s all coming out of my pocket, so I just do what I can do, and to win some money in these events is important. I want to be on tour, supporting my friends and trying to push us all up.?
Krystian Kymerson (BRA), 17, who took top honors yesterday while posting the day?s highest scores, put in a repeat performance today in the afternoon?s improving conditions to blast the day?s highest single-wave score of a 9.17 en route to earning the highest heat-total of Copa Quiksilver El Salvador competition, a 17.50 out of 20.
?I want to keep doing what I?m doing and I?m really focused,? Kymerson said. ?My board is feeling really good and the waves are good, so I?m going to do the same thing the whole way through.?
Torrey Meister (Kona, HI), 23, immediately found a rhythm in Punta Roca?s high-performance right-handers and dominated his Round of 64 bout with a 16.33 heat total with powerful forehand surfing to move through to the Round of 48.
?The waves are sick, I?m like a kind in candy shop,? Meister said. ?I haven?t surfed good waves in a long time. It?s a little onshore right now and good for airs and it feels good to get a heat out of the way. I like this wave a lot and I?m just going to try and have fun. It?s my first time to Punta Roca and I?m just trying to enjoy it.?
Ezekiel Lau (Honolulu, HI), 17, was another Hawaiian to put on a strong performance. Lau, who was a standout on the opening day of competition, was responsible for the upset of the event, taking down top seed Brian Toth (PRI), 26, and local favorite Jimmy Rotherham (La Libertad, ESA) while advancing into the Round of 48.
?That last heat was a battle,? Lau said. ?I tried to get a good start early because the waves slowed down. I tried to get on a good roll, but conditions have cleaned up a lot from earlier. I try to mix things up and have fun and just surf because this wave allows you to show your repertoire more than most waves.?
