Lay Day Called at ASP PRIME Quiksilver Pro Portugal
RIBEIRA D’ILHAS, ERICEIRA / Portugal (Wednesday, June 15, 2011) – The ASP PRIME Quiksilver Pro Portugal has called a lay day due to small inconsistent surf in the 1ft (0.5m) range at the main event site of Ribera D’Ilhas. Poor conditions greeted event officials and surfers early this morning and a decision was taken to hold off restarting Round 1 of competition and wait for a swell increase expected to hit overnight.
Following an excellent opening day of action from some of the world’s best surfers at the Quiksilver Pro Portugal, the forecast proved correct for Day Two of the official waiting period with non-contestable conditions and light variable winds. Looking ahead to the remainder of the week and leading into the weekend a new swell is on the way and set to produce quality right-handers at the reef point break of Ribera D’Ilhas.
Quiksilver Pro Portugal contest director and former ASP Star tour competitor, Jose Gregorio did not hesitate to call off competition after assessing conditions and watching the few surfers in the line-up trying to surf the inconsistent set waves. The four days remaining in the official waiting period allows time to run competition in more favourable conditions.
“The swell will start to pick up tomorrow morning and it will last for four days so I think that from Thursday to Sunday there will be waves. We will have to see about the size and if it will break through the high tide but we will finish the comp in good waves.”
“Tomorrow and the next days the high tide is later so we have more time in the morning which is when we get the best conditions,” continued Gregorio. “The goal is to give the guys the best conditions. It is a PRIME event and they have traveled from all over the world so we are trying to get them to surf in the best timing of tides and surf.”
First up in heat nº17 of Round 1 when competition resumes will be Raoni Monteiro (Saquarema, BRA) 29, who is currently sitting in the nº24 position on the ASP World Rankings and well positioned to make the 32-man mid-year cut and return to the elite ASP World Tour. Facing Monteiro will be Jay Quinn (NZL), Stuart Kennedy (AUS) and young up-and-comer Ian Gouveia (BRA).
Quinn was on-site early for his heat and agreed with the decision to wait for more favourable conditions to restart the event. Sitting low on the ASP World rankings the powerful natural-footer needs a big result to kick start his 2011 campaign.
“It is a good call not to run because it is next to flat basically at the moment. With waves coming it is definitely a good idea to wait even if it is a 6.15am call tomorrow. (Laughs) As long as we are waiting for waves I am happy. I don’t like to get pushed out in waves in a heat when it is 1ft. There is plenty of time and with the swell coming doesn’t bother me.”
The ASP PRIME Quiksilver Pro Portugal offers massive points and has attracted a selection of the World’s finest competitors looking to qualify or maintain their position on the ASP World Tour. European surfers are also out to gain the added points on offer for the ASP European Men’s Series.
A call will be made at 6.15am local time for a possible restart shortly after to the ASP PRIME Quiksilver Pro Portugal.
