Lay Day for the SuperSurf Internacional at Xangri-La, in Brazil

Atlantida, Xangri-La, Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil (Friday, May, 6, 2011) – Smaller surf in the 1-2 feet (0.5 meter) range at Praia de Atlantida today prompted event organizers to call a lay day for the ASP World 5-Star 2011 SuperSurf International at Atlantida Pier, in Xangri-La, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

“We made a second call at mid day just to make sure, but the conditions didn’t change as predicted by the swell forecast, so we’re placing our bets on the arrive of a fresh swell said to come tomorrow (Saturday). We’ll try to start the competition early at 7.00 am”, said SuperSurf Head Judge Sergio Gadelha.

“With one more day off, the Schedule has tightened up; let’s see how it’s going to be tomorrow. The format can be changed to a four man heats all the way through the finals if necessary”, said Gadelha.

All surfers agreed with the decision taken by the organizers, and some of them stayed at the beach playing Soccer as the marginal wave conditions didn’t allow for a practicing session.

Last year’s SuperSurf Champion Caetano Vargas was one of them. “The conditions here at Rio Grande do Sul are really crazy with the waves ranging from very big at the start of the contest to an almost nothing today; and for tomorrow the forecast predicts a swell even bigger than the last one. But we are all set for any condition”, said Caetano Vargas

The Brazilians Charlie Brown, Vicente Romero, Patrick Tamberg and Felipe Teixeira are on the first heat of Round of 48. Four international surfers also qualified on Thursday’s good waves and continue in the hunt for the title of the unprecedented ASP World 5-Star at Xangri-La. The winner will earn $ 16,000 and 2,000 pts 2,000 points for the unified World Ranking and ASP South America Pro Ranking.

The ASP 5-Star SuperSurf Internacional event is produced by Editora Abril with the sponsorship of Peugeot Automobile. The event also has the support of the brand Nicoboco, City of Xangri-La, Federacao Gaucha de Surf and the Associacao de Surf da Praia de Atlantida.
