Surfers Battle through Tricky Conditions on Opening Day of ASP 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior

Dylan Goodale (HAW), 19, earned the top scores on opening day of the ASP 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior.

pNEW SMYRNA BEACH INLET, Florida/USA (Friday, April 1, 2011) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior kicked off competition today in small one-foot (.5 metre) conditions at Florida’s New Smyrna Beach Inlet. Young Hawaiian Dylan Goodale (Kauai, HI), 19, started strong on the opening day of competition, posting the early rounds’ top scores.p

Stop No. 4 of 9 on the 2011 ASP North America Pro Junior Series, the DNA Energy Pro Junior is the only event to hit Florida this season and offers vital points towards surfers looking to establish themselves among the nation’s top talent to eventually qualify for the ASP World Junior Tour.

Goodale, current No. 12 on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series, kicked off his DNA Energy Pro campaign in strong form by notching the day’s highest single-wave score of 8.83 out of 10 while earning the day’s highest heat total of 14.60 out of 20.

“I went down early with Noah (Schweizer) and it wasn’t even rideable, but it turned around later in the day,” Goodale said. “It was the smallest surf I’d ever seen for a contest, but I just paddled as hard as I could to get some speed getting into the waves and did three turns on one wave and got an 8 for it.”

Goodale, who spends most of his time in Hawaii, traveled to Florida to following the ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic to get back into contest mode after a long break from surfing contests and is hoping to carry momentum from the DNA Energy Pro Junior into the remainder of the ASP Pro Junior Season.

“Before the Huntington contest I hadn’t done and event since New York last fall,” Goodale said. “I thought it’d be good to head to Florida to do another contest and build some momentum for the rest of the year. A bunch of my friends are out here as well so I thought it’d be fun.”

Noah Schweizer (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 14, proved to be to local standout of the day, notching two heat wins today including a Round 2 victory over ASP North America Pro Junior Series standout and fellow Floridian Evan Thompson (Jacksonville, FL), 19, who advanced in second, while advancing into the Round of 32.

The DNA Energy Pro Junior will see the event’s top seeds take to the water tomorrow in the Round of 32.

The DNA Energy Pro Junior holds a waiting period from March 31 through April 3, 2011. For daily event updates log on to www.aspworldtour.com or www.aspnorthamerica.org
